Canada’s quest for glory in the upcoming FIFA World Cup has been bolstered with the announcement of a 26-man squad that includes Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. Head coach Jesse Marsch revealed the roster on Friday after a training camp held in Charlotte, North Carolina. In a stunning display of support, the city of Toronto celebrated the announcement by unfurling massive banners of the team from the iconic CN Tower, overlooking the skyline.
A Diverse and Resilient Team
“This squad embodies the rich tapestry of communities, cultures, and journeys that define our nation,” Marsch stated in a press release. “These athletes are determined, fearless, and proud to wear Canada across their chest.”
Despite not participating in the camp due to a hamstring injury, Davies is expected to join his teammates in Edmonton ahead of a friendly match against Uzbekistan on Monday. However, Marsch has indicated that the talented defender might not be fit in time for Canada’s initial match in the tournament.
Roster Highlights
The Canadian roster boasts 13 players who previously represented the nation at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Among them are Juventus striker Jonathan David and Hull City midfielder Liam Millar. The inclusion of fresh faces is equally notable, with newcomers like Orlando City goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, OGC Nice defender Moïse Bombito, and Villarreal forward Tani Oluwaseyi.

The goalkeeping department will see Crépeau joined by Owen Goodman from Crystal Palace and Dayne St. Clair of Inter Miami. The defensive line is stacked with talent, including Davies, Derek Cornelius of Olympique de Marseille, Luc de Fougerolles from Fulham, Alistair Johnston (Celtic), and Richie Laryea (Toronto FC), among others.
In the midfield, Marsch has selected ten players, featuring Ali Ahmed (Norwich City), Tajon Buchanan (Villarreal), and Stephen Eustáquio (FC Porto). The forward line includes David, along with Promise David (Royale Union Saint-Gilloise) and Cyle Larin (RCD Mallorca), showcasing a blend of experience and youth.
Upcoming Matches
Following the friendly against Uzbekistan, which serves as a crucial preparation step, the Canadian squad will travel to Montreal for another match against Ireland on June 5. Notably, three players who participated in the Charlotte camp—Zorhan Bassong (Sporting Kansas City), Jayden Nelson (Austin FC), and Ralph Priso (Vancouver Whitecaps)—did not make the final World Cup roster but will continue training with the team through the friendly matches.
Canada’s World Cup campaign kicks off on June 12 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto, followed by group-stage fixtures in Vancouver against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.
Why it Matters
The significance of this squad announcement extends beyond mere roster numbers; it reflects Canada’s growing presence on the international football stage. With a mix of seasoned players and promising newcomers, the team is poised to make a mark in the tournament. As Canada prepares for its matches, the unity and determination within the squad are palpable, igniting hope among fans for a memorable World Cup journey.
