INKAS Aerospace & Defence, a Toronto-based company, is poised to launch a new armoured vehicle, the M1, as part of its efforts to strengthen ties with European and NATO partners. This initiative comes in response to the Canadian government’s push for diversification in defence procurement. However, INKAS is urging Ottawa to improve its partnership with industry, insisting that effective collaboration is essential for success in the current global environment.

Strengthening Ties with NATO Allies

The M1 armoured vehicle will be showcased to French Ambassador Michel Miraillet in May, marking a significant milestone in the burgeoning partnership between Canada and France. Designed to meet NATO standards, the M1 represents INKAS’s commitment to penetrate new markets and align with federal directives aimed at reducing reliance on the United States for defence equipment.

Chief Security Officer Andy Ellis emphasised the company’s dedication to expanding its international footprint, stating, “We’re trying to be good Canadians, we’re trying to open up new markets.” Founded in 1995, INKAS has evolved from a small operation into a substantial entity, currently employing over 350 individuals and operating across Canada, the United States, and Ukraine.

A Call for Timely Collaboration

As INKAS endeavours to meet the government’s trade diversification objectives, the company is advocating for earlier involvement from Ottawa in the procurement process. Ellis lamented the slow pace of decision-making in Canada, referencing the decade-long saga surrounding the procurement of 88 F-35 jets from Lockheed Martin. He pointed out that taxpayers are significantly investing in defence, and this spending should also focus on generating economic returns through exports and job creation.

“Let’s make that defence spending smart,” Ellis argued, advocating for a model that allows for proactive collaboration with the industry. Drawing from past experiences, he noted that working directly with American special forces on military vehicle design enabled the team to align closely with specific operational requirements from the outset.

Government Strategy and Industry Engagement

The federal government has taken steps to enhance its engagement with the defence industry, as highlighted in its recently released Defence Industrial Strategy. This strategy aims to identify and support Canadian defence “champions” through targeted procurement and collaborative development initiatives. The government has also ramped up its presence at defence-related events, exemplified by its establishment of a pavilion at the Defence Aerospace and Security Exhibition of Western Canada in Calgary.

Habib Irani, INKAS’s product and business development manager, echoed the need for increased governmental interaction with local companies. He suggested that the government should first assess local capabilities before inviting industry representatives to present their offerings.

Advancing Combat Readiness

Unlike many armoured vehicles that use modified civilian frames, INKAS’s M1 is constructed on a military-grade chassis provided by French defence firm Texelis. This design choice enhances the vehicle’s combat suitability, making it a more viable option for NATO operations. Irani expressed optimism about securing both government orders and support as the company aims to export the M1 to other NATO allies and expand its presence within European markets.
