Aubrey Cottle, a Canadian hacker connected to the infamous hacktivist group Anonymous, has received an 18-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to a cyberattack on the Texas Republican Party. The sentencing took place in a Newmarket courtroom, presided over by Justice Joseph Di Luca, who outlined the seriousness of the offences committed by the 39-year-old from Oshawa, Ontario.

Cottle’s sentence was adjusted for time already served, resulting in an additional 175 days in custody, approximately five months and three weeks. He pleaded guilty to charges that included fraudulently accessing computer services, causing damage to data owned by the Texas GOP, and violating bail conditions by using the internet unsupervised and not residing with his mother.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Cottle had been incarcerated at the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay since late October 2023. His lawyer, Riaz Sayani, described the challenging conditions under which Cottle has been held, stating that extensive lockdowns and substandard living arrangements have severely impacted his mental health.
The Cyberattack Incident
Cottle was involved in a significant cyberattack on the Texas Republican Party that occurred on September 11, 2021. During this incident, he defaced the party’s website, replacing its banner with inappropriate images, including a pornographic picture and a Rick Astley music video. Additionally, he downloaded 180 gigabytes of sensitive data from the Texas GOP’s servers, which he subsequently released online.
His access to the GOP’s systems was facilitated through Epik, a web-hosting company. The attack was publicly acknowledged by Anonymous, which claimed responsibility in a press release at the time. Cottle is also facing charges in the United States related to the illegal transfer and possession of identification intended for unlawful activities.

In light of his guilty plea, Cottle expressed a desire to reform, stating that he intends to leave his criminal activities behind. He described his past actions as a “waste” of his abilities and emphasised his commitment to being a better role model for his five-year-old son.
