Canadian wholesalers showcased robust activity in June, with a remarkable nine per cent increase in sales compared to the same month last year, as reported by Statistics Canada. This surge encompasses all seven subsectors, reflecting a broad-based recovery in wholesale trade. The figures released on Friday revealed that sales, excluding those from petroleum, petroleum products, and oilseed and grain sectors, reached over £92.5 billion, marking a 2.8 per cent rise from May and representing the fourth increase in five months.

Strong Monthly Performance

In terms of volume, wholesale sales in June experienced a 1.9 per cent uptick from the previous month. The most significant gains were recorded in the machinery, equipment, and supplies sector, which rose by 4.8 per cent month-on-month, bringing sales to £20.1 billion. This marks a turnaround for the sector, which had witnessed declines in the preceding two months. Notably, sales of farm, lawn, and garden machinery surged by an impressive 25.9 per cent, underscoring a revival in agricultural and outdoor equipment demand.

Diverse Sector Growth

Growth was also evident in the agricultural supplies and recyclable materials sectors, which reported increases of 8.3 per cent and 9.3 per cent, respectively. The miscellaneous subsector as a whole saw a 4.7 per cent rise compared to May, culminating in £12.5 billion in sales. Meanwhile, the food, beverage, and tobacco subsector experienced a modest increase of 2.8 per cent, exceeding £16.4 billion. Within this category, food sales alone climbed by 3.1 per cent, suggesting a genuine increase in volume rather than merely elevated prices.

Impact of the FIFA World Cup

The favourable June report coincides with the FIFA World Cup, which ran from June through July, subsequently boosting demand in sectors related to tourism and entertainment. Bars and restaurants across Canada benefitted significantly from heightened consumer activity during this period. As the final month of the second quarter, June also recorded a 4.2 per cent increase in wholesale sales compared to the first quarter, reaching £272.8 billion when excluding petroleum and oilseed products. By volume, sales in the second quarter rose by 2.8 per cent from the previous quarter, while the overall value saw a year-on-year increase of 7.9 per cent.

Why it Matters

The increase in wholesale sales is a promising sign for the Canadian economy, indicating that various sectors are recovering from previous downturns. With strong consumer demand, particularly in machinery and food sales, the figures suggest a positive outlook for economic growth in the coming months. This trend may also signal increased confidence among businesses and consumers, potentially leading to more job creation and investment opportunities across the country. As Canada navigates the post-pandemic landscape, these developments will be crucial in shaping the country’s economic trajectory.
