Canadians Among Activists Detained in Israeli Naval Interception of Gaza Flotilla

A group of activists, including six Canadians, has been detained by Israeli forces following the interception of a flotilla aimed at breaching the naval blockade of Gaza. The incident occurred approximately 463 kilometres from Gaza’s shores and has drawn international attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

Detained Activists Identified

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which is spearheading the mission, confirmed that five Canadian members and one participant from the Freedom Flotilla have been detained. The Canadian activists have been identified as Safa Chebbi, a grassroots political organiser from Montreal; Omar Shaban, a Toronto-based engineer focused on sustainable agriculture; Ko Tinmaung, an activist also from Toronto; Sebastian Tow, a community organiser from Vancouver; Michael France, a boat technician and activist from Vancouver; and Norrad Bouzide, a harm reduction advocate from Toronto.

In total, the mission comprises 12 Canadians among a contingent of around 500 activists who set sail from Marmaris, Turkey, last week. The flotilla’s journey to Gaza is intended to highlight the dire living conditions faced by Palestinians in the territory, which has been heavily affected by conflict.
