A recent survey reveals significant apprehension among Canadians regarding the proliferation of artificial intelligence data centres and their potential repercussions on energy costs and the environment. Conducted by Leger, the poll indicates that 81 per cent of respondents are worried that the establishment of these facilities could lead to increased household electricity bills, while 79 per cent are concerned about the environmental consequences associated with their substantial energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Public Sentiment on Data Centres
The issue of data sovereignty was also a focal point in the survey, which gauged public opinion on the establishment of data centres to support Canadian-based AI services. While a slight majority showed support, with 46 per cent stating that building these facilities would enhance Canada’s control over its data, 37 per cent disagreed. Andrew Enns, executive vice-president of Leger for Central Canada, noted the mixed feelings among Canadians regarding the construction of data centres across the nation.
When asked about the potential for data centres in their own provinces, public opinion remained divided. Approximately 44 per cent of those surveyed expressed support for local data centre developments, while 42 per cent voiced opposition. This division reflects a broader uncertainty about the future of data infrastructure in Canada.
Awareness and Attitudes Towards Energy Supply
The survey, which involved 1,505 participants from July 10 to July 13, also highlighted a high level of awareness regarding data centres, with 62 per cent of respondents indicating they had heard of them. When it comes to energy supply for these facilities, a majority (58 per cent) believe that provincial governments or electricity providers should be responsible for supplying power. However, nearly a third of respondents stated that such support should only be granted if data centre companies cover the full costs of electricity and necessary infrastructure. Additionally, 31 per cent argued that these companies should be entirely self-sufficient in meeting their energy needs.
Plans are underway to significantly increase data centre capacity across Canada, with Alberta poised to be the primary site for this expansion. The proposed centres may source their power from natural gas plants rather than relying on the existing electrical grid, raising further concerns about environmental sustainability.
Local Opposition and Policy Responses
Public opposition to data centres has emerged throughout the country, including notable resistance in Alberta. In June, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew rejected proposals for a substantial data centre near Winnipeg, signalling a growing scrutiny of such initiatives at both local and provincial levels. This trend suggests a collective pushback against potential environmental degradation and rising costs associated with these developments.
