A recent survey has revealed that a significant number of Canadians are apprehensive about the environmental and financial implications of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres. Conducted by Leger, the poll found that 81 per cent of participants worry these facilities may lead to increased electricity bills, while 79 per cent expressed concerns regarding their environmental footprint, including excessive energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Poll Insights on Public Sentiment
The survey, which gathered responses from 1,505 individuals between July 10 and July 13, indicates a divided opinion among Canadians regarding the establishment of data centres to support AI services within the country. While nearly half of those surveyed, specifically 46 per cent, view the construction of these facilities as beneficial for enhancing Canada’s data sovereignty, 37 per cent disagree, suggesting a complex landscape of public sentiment.
Andrew Enns, Leger’s executive vice-president for Central Canada, noted the mixed feelings towards these developments. “We’re seeing evidence that there is a bit of a divided opinion amongst Canadians regarding the construction of these data centres around the country,” he stated, highlighting the nuances of public opinion.
Regional Perspectives on Data Centres
The survey also probed how Canadians feel about the potential for AI data centres in their own provinces. Results showed that 44 per cent of respondents would support such initiatives, while 42 per cent would oppose them. This close split underlines the ongoing debate about balancing technological advancement with environmental considerations.
Interestingly, awareness of data centres appears to be relatively high, with 62 per cent of Canadians reporting familiarity with the concept. This suggests that the public is engaging with the discourse surrounding technology and its societal implications.
Electricity Supply and Infrastructure Concerns
Respondents were further questioned about who should supply electricity to these AI facilities. The majority, 58 per cent, believe that provincial governments or electricity providers should be responsible for supplying power to data centres. However, a substantial portion of the public, nearly one-third, indicated that this support should only be extended if companies fully cover the associated costs, including infrastructure requirements. Additionally, 31 per cent argued that data centre operators should be self-sufficient in meeting their energy needs, underscoring concerns about the burden on public resources.
As the demand for data centre capacity in Canada is expected to grow, particularly in Alberta where plans are in motion to expand operations, there are indications that these facilities may rely on natural gas power rather than the conventional electrical grid. This raises further questions about the sustainability of energy sources used by such centres.
Public Opposition and Political Response
Across Canada, opposition to the proliferation of data centres has gained traction. In June, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew notably rejected a proposal for a large data centre near Winnipeg, reflecting the growing unease regarding the environmental costs associated with such developments. Similar sentiments have surfaced in Alberta and other provinces, where local communities are voicing their concerns over the potential impacts on both energy supply and environmental integrity.
