A recent survey has revealed that a significant portion of Canadians harbour concerns regarding the environmental repercussions and potential increases in electricity bills stemming from the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres. Conducted by Leger, the poll found that 81 per cent of respondents fear that these facilities could lead to soaring household energy costs, while 79 per cent are apprehensive about their environmental footprint, which includes excessive energy and water consumption, as well as greenhouse gas emissions.
Public Opinion on Data Centres
The survey, which engaged 1,505 individuals between July 10 and July 13, indicates a nuanced stance among Canadians on the establishment of AI data centres. While concerns are prevalent, the survey also suggested that nearly half of the participants, at 46 per cent, support the construction of data centres aimed at bolstering Canadian control over data. Conversely, 37 per cent view such developments unfavourably, highlighting a divided opinion on the issue.
Andrew Enns, Leger’s executive vice-president for Central Canada, noted that Canadians appear to have mixed feelings about data centres. “We’re seeing evidence that there is a bit of a divided opinion amongst Canadians regarding the construction of these data centres around the country,” he remarked.
Provincial Perspectives
When the conversation shifted to the possibility of data centres being built within their own provinces, the responses were similarly split. Approximately 44 per cent expressed support for such projects, while 42 per cent were opposed. This reflects a broader apprehension about the implications of data centres on local communities and resources.
The Canadian Research Insights Council, which oversees polling standards, emphasizes that the online format of the survey does not allow for the calculation of a margin of error due to the non-random sampling method. Notably, awareness of data centres among Canadians is relatively high, with 62 per cent indicating they have heard of them.
Electricity Supply and Responsibility
The survey further examined opinions on the supply of electricity to these AI data centres. A majority, 58 per cent, believe that provincial governments or electricity providers should oversee the power supply for these facilities. In contrast, nearly a third argued that such provisions should only occur if the data centre companies cover the full costs of electricity and necessary infrastructure. Additionally, around 31 per cent insisted that data centres should be self-sufficient regarding their energy needs and not rely on public electricity.
As Canada gears up for an ambitious expansion of data centre capacity—particularly in Alberta, where facilities are likely to draw energy from natural gas plants rather than the electric grid—public pushback is gaining momentum. Protests against data centres have sprouted across the country, including Alberta. Recently, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew dismissed plans for a large data centre southeast of Winnipeg, reflecting the growing unease surrounding these developments.

As the demand for AI technologies continues to surge, the debate around data centres intensifies. While these facilities promise advancements in the tech landscape, they also pose significant challenges related to energy consumption and environmental sustainability.
The growing reliance on AI technology necessitates a careful evaluation of how data centres are integrated into the existing energy framework. As municipalities and provinces consider the expansion of these centres, balancing economic growth with ecological responsibilities will be crucial.
