A recent survey has revealed widespread apprehension among Canadians regarding the potential ramifications of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres on both household energy costs and the environment. Conducted by Leger, the poll found that an overwhelming 81 per cent of respondents expressed concern that the proliferation of these facilities could lead to increased electricity bills. Additionally, 79 per cent voiced worries about the significant environmental footprint associated with data centres, including their high energy and water consumption, as well as greenhouse gas emissions.
Rising Energy Costs and Environmental Implications
The survey highlights a growing unease among Canadians about the balance between technological advancement and ecological sustainability. The data centres, designed to support AI services, are seen as potential culprits in driving up household energy expenses. As many households already face rising utility bills, the prospect of additional costs related to the energy-intensive operations of data centres is alarming for many.
Andrew Enns, Leger’s executive vice-president for Central Canada, noted a noticeable division in public opinion regarding the construction of these facilities across the nation. The survey, which polled 1,505 individuals from July 10 to July 13, also revealed that awareness of data centres is relatively high, with 62 per cent of respondents indicating familiarity with the concept.

The issue of who should supply electricity to AI data centres also emerged in the survey results. A significant majority, 58 per cent, believed that provincial governments or electricity providers should be responsible for supplying power to these facilities. However, a considerable portion of respondents (31 per cent) argued that data centre companies should not rely on public electricity and should instead meet their own energy needs.
Plans for expanding data centre capacity in Canada are underway, with a significant portion of this expansion projected to occur in Alberta. There, proposals suggest that these facilities could draw energy from natural gas plants, alleviating some pressure on the existing electrical grid. However, public opposition to data centres has been evident across the country, including in Alberta, where local concerns have led to setbacks for proposed developments. Notably, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew recently rejected plans for a substantial data centre southeast of Winnipeg.
