Rashid Sheriff’s introduction to photography began in his school days, where he first fell in love with the craft. However, due to the constraints of life, including financial limitations, he was unable to pursue his artistic aspirations. For the last 18 years, this Kerala native has been residing in Qatar, working diligently as an auto electrician. While his day job kept him grounded, the advent of smartphones reignited his passion for photography, allowing him to explore the world around him with renewed enthusiasm.
“It’s a joy to be close to nature,” Sheriff shares, expressing his preference for macro photography that captures the intricate details of wildlife and pets. “My smartphone enables me to seize those spontaneous moments that often go unnoticed,” he adds, highlighting the unique capabilities of modern technology.
The Art of the Shot
Sheriff’s award-winning photograph was taken during a recent visit back to his home in Kerala. After a long day of rest, he ventured onto his balcony, eager to photograph one of his pet fish, Grace. With meticulous care, he filled a white ceramic bowl with water and gently placed the crowntail betta inside. Known for its regal fins resembling crowns, this species is also commonly referred to as a fighter fish.
Utilising the advanced features of his iPhone, Sheriff turned his device upside down to immerse it in the bowl, carefully employing both the zoom and macro modes to capture the vibrant colours and delicate textures of the fish. “I prefer low-angle or eye-level shots when photographing animals,” he explains. “This perspective helps us connect with them on a deeper level.” His hope is that viewers will feel a sense of wonder and curiosity when they see his work.
