In a striking display of creativity, Indian photographer Rashid Sheriff has taken the art of smartphone photography to new depths—literally. His breathtaking image of a crowntail betta fish, captured using an iPhone 17 Pro Max, invites viewers to see the world through his lens and appreciate the delicate beauty of aquatic life. This intimate portrait not only showcases Sheriff’s photographic talent but also highlights the transformative power of technology in rekindling old passions.
Rediscovering a Passion
Sheriff’s journey into the world of photography began during his formative years. Growing up in Kerala, India, he was captivated by both drawing and photography, but life’s circumstances kept him from fully pursuing these interests. For the past 18 years, he has earned a living as an auto electrician in Qatar, where the hustle and bustle of daily life often overshadow creativity.
However, the advent of smartphones has allowed him to reconnect with his artistic side. “I love to be close to nature, so I was always drawn to macro photography and animals and pets,” Sheriff explains. With his phone in hand, he seizes spontaneous moments, capturing the essence of his surroundings with remarkable precision.
An Unforgettable Capture
The defining moment for Sheriff came during a recent trip back to his native Kerala. Feeling tired after a long day, he awoke to the serene setting on his balcony, where he decided to photograph one of his cherished pets—a crowntail betta fish.
“I filled a white ceramic bowl and carefully placed the fish inside,” he recounts. “This is a crowntail betta fish, named for its fins, which look like crowns, but people often call it a fighter fish.” With the fish securely in the bowl, Sheriff turned his phone upside down, submerging it in the water to capture a unique perspective.
Utilising the zoom and macro mode, he was able to highlight intricate details that might otherwise go unnoticed. “I really like taking low-angle or eye-level shots of animals; it allows us to get to know them better,” he notes. His hope is that this image will spark wonder and curiosity among those who view it.
The Art of Connection
Sheriff’s talent is not just in the technical aspects of photography but in his ability to connect with his subjects. The low-angle shots he prefers bring viewers closer to the animal’s world, offering a glimpse that is often obscured by traditional perspectives.
His portrayal of the crowntail betta is a reminder of the beauty that exists in the minutiae of life. These small creatures, often overlooked, possess an intricate elegance that Sheriff masterfully captures. In an era where attention spans are fleeting, his work encourages us to pause and reflect on the natural world around us.
Why it Matters
Rashid Sheriff’s stunning portrait of a crowntail betta fish serves as a powerful testament to the potential of everyday technology to foster creativity and artistic expression. In a world increasingly dominated by digital distractions, Sheriff’s work calls for a return to appreciation—the simple joy of observing life closely and capturing its essence. It reminds us of the beauty that can emerge from our surroundings and the profound connections we can forge with nature, urging us to explore and celebrate the wonders of our world, one snapshot at a time.
