In a striking testament to the power of modern technology and personal passion, Indian photographer Rashid Sheriff has harnessed the capabilities of his iPhone to create a breathtaking image of his pet fish, a crowntail betta. This intimate photograph, taken during a recent visit to his hometown in Kerala, showcases not only the beauty of the aquatic creature but also Sheriff’s rekindled love for photography after years of absence from his artistic pursuits.

A Journey Back to Passion

Rashid Sheriff’s relationship with photography began in his formative years, yet life’s circumstances led him to set aside his creative ambitions. Now, after 18 years of working as an auto electrician in Qatar, Sheriff has discovered a new avenue for self-expression through smartphone photography.

“I love to be close to nature, so I was always drawn to macro photography and animals and pets,” he explains. With the advent of smartphones, he found a way to reconnect with his artistic roots. “My phone allows me to capture beautiful, spontaneous moments with precision, even when they happen unexpectedly.”

The Art of the Shot

The inspiration for Sheriff’s latest photograph came during a quiet day spent at home in Kerala. After a long and exhausting sleep, he stepped onto his balcony to engage with his surroundings. It was then that he decided to photograph one of his beloved pets.

“I filled a white ceramic bowl and carefully placed the fish inside,” Sheriff recounts. The crowntail betta, known for its elaborate fin structure resembling a crown, is affectionately referred to as a fighter fish due to its spirited nature. To achieve the perfect shot, Sheriff turned his phone upside down and submerged it into the bowl, utilising the zoom and macro modes to capture intricate details.

“I really like taking low-angle or eye-level shots of animals; it allows us to get to know them better,” he adds, reflecting on his technique. His hope is that this image will evoke feelings of wonder and curiosity in those who encounter it.

The Intersection of Technology and Nature

Sheriff’s photograph serves as a reminder of how technology can enhance our appreciation for the natural world. The innovation embedded in modern smartphones allows individuals like Sheriff to explore the depths of their creativity without the need for professional equipment. This accessibility has opened doors for countless aspiring photographers who wish to document their lives and surroundings.

Moreover, Sheriff’s dedication to capturing the beauty of everyday moments reflects a growing trend among amateur photographers seeking to share their unique perspectives on social media platforms. The ability to produce high-quality images with a device that fits in one’s pocket has transformed the photography landscape, empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds to express themselves through visual storytelling.

Why it Matters

Rashid Sheriff’s journey from an aspiring artist to an auto electrician, and back to photography, highlights the transformative power of technology in reconnecting us with our passions. His stunning underwater portrait of a crowntail betta is not just a photograph; it is a celebration of the intricate relationship between humans and nature. In a world where our connection to the environment often feels strained, Sheriff’s work serves as a poignant reminder to pause, observe, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us, urging viewers to explore their own creativity in the process.
