In a striking exploration of isolation and perspective, photographer Alon Goldsmith has immortalised a moment from his year-long photographic journey, aptly dubbed a “365-day project.” On Day 111, he stumbled upon a poignant scene that encapsulates the essence of the lonely gaze of a viewing machine overlooking an empty beach, a testament to the beauty found in solitude and the unexpected corners of daily life.

A Year of Daily Discovery

Goldsmith, originally from Johannesburg and now residing in Los Angeles, embarked on this ambitious project on New Year’s Day 2026. The premise is simple yet demanding: capture and share a photograph every day for an entire year. “Some days it’s a struggle to find something worthy of inclusion, while on others, the challenge lies in making a final selection,” Goldsmith reflects.

His daily bike rides take him across the vibrant landscapes of Venice and Santa Monica Pier, which he describes as a “cornucopia of curiosities.” It is during these excursions that he seeks to discover and document fleeting moments, allowing him to engage with his surroundings more thoughtfully. “Viewing the world from this vantage point encourages me to slow down,” he explains. “When I’m not in a rush, the world reveals itself more fully.”

The Power of Contrast

The photograph in question features a Hi-Spy Viewing Machine, strategically positioned on the pier, silently gazing out at the vast expanse of the beach. In post-production, Goldsmith chose to render the image in black and white, a decision he believes enhances its dramatic and cinematic qualities. “The monochrome treatment emphasises the graphic nature of the composition,” he remarks. He feels the interplay of light and shadow adds a sculptural weight to the scene, while the presence of a solitary bird lends an anthropomorphic quality to the viewing machine, transforming it into a character steeped in solitude.

Yet, Goldsmith’s commitment to authenticity shines through in his approach to editing. He refrained from removing elements such as the swooping seagull or stray bits of sand, adhering to the ethical standards of street photography that dictate a respect for the rawness of the moment. “Altering an image in that way is simply out of the question,” he insists.

The Artistic Journey

Goldsmith’s artistic process reflects a deeper understanding of both the medium and his own evolving perspective. His commitment to capturing the world as it is, rather than as he wishes it to be, allows viewers to connect with the image on a more profound level. Each photograph serves as a snapshot not just of a moment, but of his own ongoing journey through life’s complexities.

The challenge of daily photography serves not only as a means of creative expression but also as a catalyst for introspection. In a society increasingly dominated by screens and digital distractions, Goldsmith’s work invites us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the subtleties that often go unnoticed.

Why it Matters

Goldsmith’s project underscores the importance of mindfulness in our increasingly frenetic world. Through his lens, he captures moments that might otherwise slip through the cracks of our daily lives, reminding us of the beauty inherent in solitude and the power of observation. His work encourages a thoughtful engagement with our surroundings, prompting us to slow down and truly see the world around us. In doing so, he not only documents his own journey but also inspires others to embark on their own explorations of creativity and self-discovery.
