In a remarkable fusion of artistry and culture, Turkish photographer Alahattin Kanlioğlu has immortalised the vibrant life at Inle Lake, Myanmar, through his lens. His captivating image, featuring local fishermen and Buddhist monks, encapsulates the unique traditions of this picturesque region, showcasing not just the beauty of the landscape but also the richness of its cultural tapestry.

A Return to Myanmar

Having dedicated over twenty years to the field of communication at Ege University in Izmir, Turkey, Kanlioğlu first journeyed to Myanmar in 2019, igniting a passion that would draw him back to the country multiple times. His latest visit in December 2025 was particularly special, as it coincided with a photography workshop he organised for a group of six enthusiastic students, eager to learn from his expertise.

The workshop took them to Inle Lake, nestled within the Shan Hills, where they explored its breathtaking scenery and vibrant local life. “The people of this region live in wooden houses built on tree stumps. Some surround the lake, but others are on the water, as if they’re floating,” Kanlioğlu reflects on the striking architecture that characterises the area.

A Masterful Moment

In his acclaimed photograph, Kanlioğlu captures two fishermen expertly manoeuvring their boats with foot-controlled oars—an artistic skill that is as functional as it is impressive. This technique allows them to keep one hand free for catching fish, a testament to the deep connection these individuals have with their aquatic environment.

A Masterful Moment

The image also features a local woman, who is seen offering food to three Buddhist monks, a daily ritual that underscores the spiritual harmony within the community. “They walk from their temples early in the morning carrying earthenware bowls. This photograph accurately depicts them receiving food donations from a woman selling flowers on the lake,” he explains, revealing the depth of thought behind the composition.

Admiration for Local Craftsmanship

Kanlioğlu holds a profound appreciation for the fishermen and their age-old practices. “It’s understandable that people who have been born into this culture and immersed in water since childhood have such developed abilities, but it’s miraculous for foreigners like me to witness it,” he asserts, highlighting the enchantment he feels as an outsider observing a world so different from his own.

This sentiment resonates deeply with anyone who has had the privilege of experiencing cultures that are rich in heritage and tradition. The ability to capture such moments not only enriches our understanding of these communities but also encourages a global appreciation for their unique lifestyles.

Why it Matters

Kanlioğlu’s work serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural exchange and understanding. In an increasingly interconnected world, photography becomes a bridge, allowing us to glimpse the lives of others while fostering empathy and respect. His enchanting portrayal of Inle Lake not only showcases its serene beauty but also underscores the significance of preserving such traditions in the face of modernity. Through his lens, we are invited to reflect on the delicate balance between nature and culture, urging us to appreciate the extraordinary narratives that unfold in everyday life around the globe.
