Catnip Lotion Emerges as a Viable Mosquito Repellent in Uganda, Rivaling Deet

In a groundbreaking development for malaria prevention, researchers in Uganda have unveiled a catnip-based lotion that demonstrates comparable efficacy to the widely used chemical repellent, Deet. This discovery comes at a crucial time, as the fight against malaria—a disease responsible for infecting approximately 282 million individuals annually—faces increasing challenges from insecticide resistance and limited access to affordable protective measures.

A Natural Alternative to Chemical Repellents

The study, presented at the Society for Experimental Biology conference in Florence, showcases the potential of catnip, or Nepeta cataria, a common herb known for its euphoric effects on cats, to serve as an effective insect repellent. The active compound in catnip, nepetalactone, has been shown to deter mosquitoes, providing a promising alternative to synthetic repellents.

Dr Simon Scofield, a senior lecturer at Cardiff University, led the research team and explained the significance of their findings. “We found that a 6% catnip oil was just as effective as Deet, and the 2% catnip oil was only marginally less effective,” he stated. This discovery holds particular relevance for rural Ugandan subsistence farmers, who often find commercial mosquito repellents financially out of reach.

Field Trials Confirm Efficacy

The research team conducted both laboratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the catnip lotion. In the field trials, volunteers were monitored for mosquito landings on their legs while using various formulations: a 15% Deet lotion, a 2% catnip oil, a 6% catnip oil, and placebos. The results confirmed that the catnip formulations significantly reduced mosquito landings, affirming their potential as a practical solution in areas where malaria is endemic.

The researchers aimed to create a sustainable and cost-effective repellent that could be produced locally. With initial distributions funded by grants, the next phase will focus on scaling production and selling the lotion to establish a self-sustaining model for community workers involved in its manufacture.

The Role of Local Production

The initiative not only addresses the pressing need for affordable mosquito repellents but also empowers local communities. As Dr Scofield noted, “Once we know that we can sell and distribute the repellent at a low cost, that should generate a self-sustaining system where the money is flowing back to everybody at each stage in the development.”

While the study’s findings are promising, the challenge of ensuring compliance with topical repellents remains. Swai Kyeba, a research entomologist from the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania, highlighted the need for ongoing research to understand the usage patterns of repellents among Ugandan households before scaling up production of the catnip lotion.
