In a groundbreaking study conducted in northern Uganda, researchers have revealed that a catnip-based lotion rivals the effectiveness of the widely used chemical repellent Deet in warding off mosquitoes, the primary vectors of malaria. This revelation could significantly transform the fight against a disease that claims hundreds of thousands of lives each year, particularly among the most vulnerable populations.
A Natural Solution to a Deadly Problem
Malaria remains a relentless scourge in many parts of Africa, with approximately 282 million people infected annually and around 610,000 fatalities reported in 2024 alone, predominantly among young children. Amid rising concerns about insecticide resistance and the affordability of traditional repellents, the search for alternative solutions has become increasingly urgent.
The catnip lotion, derived from the herb Nepeta cataria, harnesses the power of nepetalactone—an active compound that not only excites felines but also repels insects. A team of researchers from Cardiff University and local organisations in Uganda has successfully tested this natural repellent, demonstrating its potential to protect communities at risk of malaria.
Field Trials Yield Promising Results
The research was presented at the Society for Experimental Biology conference in Florence, showcasing the results of both laboratory tests and field trials conducted in eastern Uganda. Volunteers were tested under varying conditions: some applied a standard 15% Deet lotion, while others used either a 2% or a 6% catnip lotion, alongside placebo creams. The findings were compelling—mosquitoes were significantly less likely to land on individuals wearing the catnip lotion compared to those using Deet or a placebo.
Dr Simon Scofield, a senior lecturer at Cardiff University, emphasised the importance of making these repellents accessible: “We aimed to create an effective repellent that not only costs little but also involves local communities in its production.” The implications of this research extend beyond mere efficacy; they address economic realities faced by rural Ugandan families who often cannot afford commercial repellents.
Sustainability and Community Involvement
Currently distributed free of charge through grant funding, the next phase of the project will focus on scaling production and selling the catnip lotion at a low cost. This approach seeks to establish a self-sustaining model, ensuring that profits from sales benefit local workers and the community at large.
Swai Kyeba, an entomologist from the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania, who was not involved in this research, highlighted the necessity for new vector control tools: “It is crucial to develop affordable and locally produced options to improve accessibility.” However, he cautioned that the effectiveness of topical repellents can be hindered by inconsistent application—an issue that needs addressing before the catnip lotion can be widely implemented.

While the initial results are promising, further research is essential to understand the long-term implications of using catnip lotion in households at risk of malaria. The study’s architects are optimistic that with continued support and further investigation, this natural repellent could serve as a vital tool in the ongoing battle against malaria.
