In a groundbreaking study conducted in Uganda, researchers have unveiled that a locally-produced catnip lotion demonstrates efficacy comparable to the widely-used insect repellent, Deet. This revelation presents a promising alternative in the ongoing battle against malaria, a disease that continues to afflict millions, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
A Local Solution to a Global Problem
The research, showcased at the Society for Experimental Biology conference in Florence, has shed light on the potential of catnip, or Nepeta cataria, a common herb known for its euphoric effects on felines. The active compound, nepetalactone, has now been identified as a potent insect repellent as well. Dr Simon Scofield, a senior lecturer at Cardiff University and part of the research team, noted that a 6% concentration of catnip oil proved to be as effective as Deet, while a 2% concentration was only slightly less potent.
“Deet is out of reach for many rural Ugandan farmers, making commercial repellents impractical,” said Dr Scofield. “Our aim was to develop a highly effective repellent that could be produced locally, thereby keeping costs minimal and involving the community in the production process.”
Trials and Tribulations
The study’s methodology involved both laboratory and field tests in eastern Uganda. Researchers assessed the number of mosquitoes landing on volunteers’ legs over an evening. Participants were divided into groups using Deet, a 2% catnip lotion, a 6% catnip lotion, or placebo creams. The results confirmed that those using catnip lotion experienced significantly fewer mosquito landings.
Importantly, the research highlighted the potential for local production of the catnip repellent. Currently, the lotion is distributed free of charge through grant funding, but plans are underway to increase production and sell the product, creating a sustainable income source for local workers.
“Once we establish a market for the repellent at an affordable price, it will generate a self-sustaining system benefiting everyone involved in its production,” Dr Scofield explained.
Expert Opinions on Future Directions
Swai Kyeba, a research entomologist at the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania and not affiliated with the study, emphasised the necessity for new, cost-effective vector-control tools in malaria prevention. “However, adherence to the application of topical repellents can be low, which is why they should complement other malaria control strategies,” he added.
Kyeba also urged for further investigations into the use of existing repellents within Ugandan households before the catnip lotion is mass-produced.
