Catnip Lotion Rivals Deet in Mosquito Repellent Trials in Uganda

In a significant breakthrough for malaria prevention, researchers in Uganda have unveiled a catnip-based lotion that demonstrates effectiveness comparable to the widely used chemical repellent, Deet. This innovative solution arises at a crucial time, as the battle against malaria continues to intensify, affecting millions globally and claiming countless young lives each year.

A Natural Alternative to Chemical Repellents

The study, presented at the Society for Experimental Biology conference in Florence, highlights how a lotion derived from Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnip, could offer a viable alternative to expensive and sometimes inaccessible commercial repellents. The research team, comprising scientists from Uganda and Wales, found that a 6% concentration of catnip oil performed just as well as Deet in repelling mosquitoes, while a 2% concentration was only slightly less effective.

Dr. Simon Scofield, a senior lecturer at Cardiff University and one of the lead researchers, explained the implications of their findings. “Deet is often beyond the financial reach of rural Ugandan subsistence farmers. Our goal was to create an effective repellent that would empower local communities to be involved in its production, ensuring it remains affordable,” he stated.

Testing the Efficacy of Catnip

The rigorous evaluation began with laboratory tests that confirmed catnip oil’s potential as an insect repellent. Subsequently, field trials in eastern Uganda assessed how many mosquitoes landed on volunteers treated with various lotions over an evening. Some participants used Deet, while others applied either a 2% or 6% catnip lotion, and a control group received placebo creams. The results were promising, indicating a significant reduction in mosquito landings on those wearing the catnip products.

Although the study did not investigate whether the lotion attracted local cats, Dr. Scofield noted the strong likelihood, given the active ingredient’s known appeal to felines. “While we didn’t conduct experiments on cat attraction, I suspect cats would indeed be drawn to it,” he remarked.

A Sustainable Production Model

Moving forward, the researchers have set their sights on creating a sustainable production model for the catnip lotion. Currently distributed for free through grant funding, plans are underway to increase production and establish a sales mechanism that benefits local workers. Dr. Scofield elaborated on this vision: “Once we can sell the repellent at an affordable price, we aim to develop a self-sustaining system that ensures financial returns for everyone involved in the process.”

The Deet lotion used for comparison contained 15% of the chemical, which is the standard recommendation for travellers from the UK visiting regions prone to malaria. However, the introduction of the catnip lotion could revolutionise accessibility for those who cannot afford commercial options.

The Need for Diverse Solutions in Malaria Control

Swai Kyeba, a research entomologist from the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania, noted the importance of exploring new vector-control tools. “Affordable, locally produced alternatives like this catnip lotion are crucial as they enhance accessibility,” he emphasised. However, he cautioned against reliance solely on topical repellents due to the necessity for frequent reapplication. He advocated for further research into the effectiveness of existing repellents within Ugandan households before scaling up production of the catnip lotion.
