Buddy, a Cayuga duck, has become a beloved fixture along the shores of Lake Summerside in south Edmonton. However, this man-made lake is far from his natural habitat, and concerned locals are stepping up efforts to ensure his well-being. Kim Livingston, office manager at the Lake Summerside Residents Association, describes Buddy as “a big boy” who appears content, but the reality is that he needs help.
An Unexpected Visitor
Buddy made his appearance at Lake Summerside approximately three months ago. Initially, his presence went unnoticed, but a concerning incident soon raised alarms. The duck became entangled in a fishing lure, prompting Livingston to reach out to Wild North, a local wildlife rescue organisation, for assistance. “I called and asked if they would take him, as I was concerned about the hook in his bill,” she recounted.
Upon sending photos to Wild North, Livingston learned that Buddy, being a domestic duck, fell outside their remit for rehabilitation. Cayuga ducks, like Buddy, were developed in New York State during the 19th century, bred from a combination of wild black ducks, the Black East India, and the Rouen. While they are known to be resilient and can endure cold climates, Alberta’s harsh winter conditions pose a significant threat to Buddy, especially since he is unable to fly.
The Challenge of Rescuing Buddy
Livingston expressed her concerns about Buddy’s future. “He can’t take off from here, so he’s stuck,” she explained. Not only is he at risk of not surviving the winter without proper shelter, but she also noted that despite foraging around the lake, he isn’t receiving the nutrition he needs. While residents have been feeding him waterfowl food three times a day, this is merely a stopgap solution.
Fortunately, a new owner has been identified for Buddy—a person with an established environment for ducks and geese. However, the next challenge is persuading Buddy to leave his current home. Efforts to catch him have proven difficult; Livingston shared, “We spent about two hours trying to catch him. He outsmarted us every time.”
Expert Assistance on the Way
To address the situation, an expert bird catcher is set to assist in Buddy’s relocation this weekend. In the meantime, residents and visitors to Lake Summerside are being asked to respect Buddy’s space, allowing him some peace while efforts are underway to facilitate his transition to a more suitable environment.
