A recent outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection associated with severe gastrointestinal distress, has been traced back to iceberg lettuce sourced from a supplier in Mexico and distributed to several Taco Bell outlets across multiple states. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning on Thursday, advising consumers in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia to avoid consuming shredded lettuce linked to the outbreak. Though the identity of the Mexican supplier has not been disclosed, sources have indicated that Taylor Farms, based in California, may serve as the U.S. distributor of the affected produce.

Details of the Outbreak

According to the CDC, over 1,644 individuals have reported gastrointestinal illness after dining at Taco Bell locations in the aforementioned states. The federal health agency has highlighted the ongoing investigation and urged vigilance, stating that other food vendors may also be implicated as inquiries progress.

In an effort to mitigate risk, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is collaborating closely with the identified supplier to ascertain whether any contaminated lettuce remains available in the marketplace. Taco Bell has responded by pledging to discontinue the use of any lettuce sourced from the implicated supplier during the investigation.

In a statement released on Tuesday, prior to the official CDC announcement, Taco Bell acknowledged that it had proactively removed certain ingredients from select restaurants as a precautionary measure. Despite the outbreak’s severity, other popular fast-food chains, such as Wendy’s and Chipotle, have confirmed they are not affected, according to reports.

While cyclosporiasis is less prevalent than more notorious foodborne pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, the number of reported cases has increased in recent years, with significant spikes noted in 2018 and 2019.

The current outbreak in the U.S. has raised concerns, but it is noteworthy that Canada has not reported any direct links to this incident. However, health officials in Quebec have observed an uptick in cases, which they attribute primarily to travel-related exposure, predominantly to Mexico.

Canadian Context

In Canada, there have been 107 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in Quebec since July 11, a notable increase from 30 cases in the same timeframe last year. Nonetheless, health officials have clarified that these cases are not on the same scale as the outbreak in Michigan. The majority of Quebec’s infections are typically associated with international travel.

British Columbia has reported 93 cases this year, with health authorities affirming that the incidence of cyclosporiasis is monitored closely, particularly in light of the U.S. outbreak. The province’s health officials noted that most cases are linked to travel and that non-travel-related instances tend to spike during the warmer months due to consumption of contaminated imported produce.

Other provinces, including Alberta, have also reported a handful of cases, primarily associated with travel to Mexico. Interestingly, jurisdictions such as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Northwest Territories have seen no reported infections this year.
