Liz Martin, a devoted nurse whose career spanned nearly five decades at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, has passed away at the age of 73. Known for her unwavering commitment to patient care and her calm demeanour in high-pressure situations, Martin dedicated her life to nursing, ultimately serving as a ward sister before retiring.
A Lifelong Commitment to Nursing
Born in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, Liz was the daughter of Pat Crowson, an office clerk, and Rachel Crowson (née Bowie). From a young age, she demonstrated a strong desire to pursue a career in healthcare. This ambition was solidified during her time at Cardinal Hinsley School, and her early experiences with St John Ambulance. A pivotal moment came when she was recognised for her courageous, albeit unsuccessful, attempt to save a young child from drowning in the River Trent.
In 1969, at the age of 16, Liz commenced her nursing training at Northern General Hospital. Living in a nurses’ residence that enforced strict curfews, she embraced the rigours of her education and quickly established herself as a dedicated healthcare professional.
Rising Through the Ranks
Initially starting her journey as a state enrolled nurse, Liz’s dedication and hard work enabled her to progress to state registered nurse status. The 1990s saw her undertake a conversion course that paved the way for her promotion to ward sister in 2000. In this role on a busy medical admissions ward, she became renowned for her ability to maintain composure and efficiency, even amidst the chaos of a high-turnover environment.
Her commitment to education was evident in 2005 when she transitioned to a clinical educator role, where she mentored aspiring nurses, junior doctors, and other medical personnel, sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience.
A Passionate Life Beyond the Ward
Outside of her professional life, Liz was an enthusiastic rambler and an avid reader, particularly fond of detective thrillers. She also had a passion for travel, visiting Australia twice, as well as South Africa, Canada, and various European destinations.
Liz is remembered fondly by her family, including her husband John, whom she married in 1973 after meeting him at the Northern General where he worked as a porter. She is also survived by their daughter Rachael, two grandsons, a great-granddaughter, and five siblings.
