A New Voice on the Court

The Court of the Bank of England, which serves as the official name for the institution’s governing board, is tasked with overseeing the central bank’s strategy, governance, budget, and risk framework. It operates entirely separately from the committee responsible for setting interest rates. Paul Nowak brings a distinctly different background to this elite panel. He began his career as a call centre worker before dedicating his professional life to trade unionism, eventually ascending to the TUC’s top job in 2022. The TUC is a major organisation representing 47 unions and over 5.3 million workers across the United Kingdom.

Mr Nowak will be stepping into the shoes vacated by Baroness Frances O’Grady, who previously held the non-executive director role.
