In a recent interview with the New York Times, acclaimed actress and former ballet dancer Charlize Theron expressed her disapproval of Timothée Chalamet’s comments regarding ballet and opera, labelling them “reckless”. Her remarks come in the context of a broader conversation about the value of these performing arts, particularly in an era increasingly dominated by technology.

A Call to Recognise the Arts

Theron’s criticism was directed at Chalamet’s earlier statements made during a video chat with actor Matthew McConaughey. In February, Chalamet suggested that he did not wish to work in ballet or opera, implying that these art forms were losing relevance. “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera … Things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this any more,’” he remarked.

The backlash to Chalamet’s comments has been significant, with several prominent figures from the arts community voicing their support for ballet and opera. Theron argued that both disciplines deserve greater respect, stating, “That was a very reckless comment on two art forms that we need to lift up constantly because, yes, they do have a hard time.” She highlighted the unique human experience of live performance, contrasting it with the rise of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry. “In 10 years, AI is going to be able to do Timothée’s job, but it will not be able to replace a person on a stage dancing live,” she asserted.

The Physical Toll of Dance

Theron, who trained at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet in New York before an injury curtailed her dance career, also reflected on the physical demands and sacrifices inherent in a dancer’s life. “It taught me to be tough. It’s borderline abusive. There were several times that I had blood infections from blisters that just never healed. And you don’t get a day off. I’m literally talking about bleeding through your shoes,” she revealed, underscoring the rigorous and often harsh reality faced by dancers.

Her insights resonate with the broader artistic community, many of whom have also voiced their concern over Chalamet’s comments. Notable personalities such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Misty Copeland, and Eva Mendes have publicly condemned his remarks, while director Luca Guadagnino offered a more lenient perspective, questioning the intensity of the backlash.

A Personal Reflection on Trauma

In addition to her comments on ballet, Theron opened up about her traumatic childhood in South Africa, sharing the harrowing experience of her father’s violent death at the hands of her mother in self-defence. Describing the events of June 1991, she recounted how her father attempted to break into their home, threatening their lives. “He shot through the steel doors to get in, making it very clear that he was going to kill us … [My mother] came into my bedroom. The two of us were holding the door with our bodies because there wasn’t a lock on it,” she recalled, with chilling clarity.
