Chinese regulators have greenlit a fresh wave of brain-computer interface (BCI) devices, signalling an aggressive bid to compete with Elon Musk’s Neuralink on the global stage. Several domestic startups have secured health authority clearance to sell their gadgets, while insurers have rolled out the country’s first commercial policies covering the invasive surgical procedures needed to fit them.
The development cements China’s position as a trailblazer in the burgeoning BCI sector. Beijing became the first nation in the world to approve brain chip devices for commercial use earlier this year, having earmarked the technology as a cornerstone strategic industry in its latest five-year economic blueprint.
The Latest Gadget on the Block
The newest device to win market approval comes courtesy of Tianjin-based outfit Tiankai Suishi Intelligent Technology. It is a striking piece of kit: a cap studded with electrodes that sits on the head and allows medical professionals to assess and diagnose a patient’s cognitive function. The cap is already available to purchase.
Semi-invasive designs like this one sit at the more accessible end of the BCI spectrum. They do not penetrate brain tissue, yet they can still translate neural activity into digital commands. More ambitious projects are also in the pipeline, including the Beinao-1 and Beinao-2 systems showcased by the Chinese Institute for Brain Research at a press event in Beijing back in March 2026.
Neuralink’s Bold Vision
Across the Pacific, Neuralink continues to grab headlines. Musk has famously described the coin-sized implant as a “Fitbit in your skull”, and he has not been shy about painting a wildly futuristic picture of where the technology could lead.

“It could even get to the point where you can upload your memories and essentially have a saved version of yourself… then download that into a robot body or a clone version of your original self,” he mused during a public event last year. “I’m really getting into sci fi here… but I do think stuff like that will be possible, which would give people a form of immortality.”
Grandiose as that sounds, the company has been racking up tangible milestones. In October, Neuralink disclosed that more than 10,000 people had signed up to its patient registry to take part in trials. At least 26 individuals have been enrolled or implanted so far, including patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and quadriplegia.
Trial participants have already demonstrated the ability to control computers and robotic arms using nothing but their thoughts. “Participants in our clinical trials have extended digital computer control to physical devices such as assistive robotic arms,” Neuralink announced in a social media post in December. “Over time, we plan to expand the range of devices controllable via Neuralink.”
The Chinese Contender’s Catch-Up Plan
Beijing-backed startup NeuCyber Neurotech is one of the firms looking to narrow the gap. Earlier this year, the company candidly admitted that its most advanced product remains roughly three years behind Neuralink in terms of raw capability. That gap, however, may be closing faster than expected given the pace of regulatory approvals and state-backed investment flowing into the sector.
The strategic significance is hard to overstate. China has identified BCIs as a frontier technology worthy of national priority, alongside artificial intelligence, quantum computing and advanced semiconductors. With insurers now willing to underwrite the surgical procedures, the commercial pathway from lab to living room is becoming significantly smoother.
Why it Matters
The brain chip race is no longer a one-horse affair. With China actively approving devices, subsidising research and even insuring the operations required to install them, the technology is shifting from science experiment to consumer product at a startling pace. For patients with paralysis or degenerative conditions, that acceleration could translate into life-changing assistance within the next few years. For the rest of us, it raises profound questions about data privacy, cognitive liberty and what it means to merge human cognition with machines. The competition between Silicon Valley showmen and Beijing’s state-driven apparatus will likely dictate not only who leads the market, but whose values shape the neural future we are all hurtling towards.
