The escalating impact of climate change is not just a matter of rising temperatures and extreme weather; it’s also affecting our sleep patterns. A recent study conducted by Climate Central has found that individuals worldwide are losing nearly 56 hours of sleep each year due to elevated nighttime temperatures, with significant portions of this loss directly attributed to climate change.
Alarming Findings from Global Analysis
The comprehensive analysis covered 1,338 cities across the globe, revealing that the average person loses about 56 hours of sleep annually, with more than six hours directly linked to climate change-induced warming. This marks the first time researchers have quantified the sleep loss attributable to climate change by evaluating the correlation between temperature variations and sleep quality.
The report underscores a troubling trend: the portion of sleep loss associated with climate change has more than doubled since the early 1970s in 1,335 of the cities examined, and has tripled in 840 of those locations. The implications are dire, suggesting that the ramifications of climate change extend far beyond environmental concerns, encroaching on fundamental human needs such as adequate rest.
Regional Disparities in Sleep Loss
The study highlights significant regional differences in sleep deprivation. In the Middle East, residents of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates reported losing between 55 and 87 hours of sleep each year due to increased nighttime temperatures, with 12 to 16 of those hours specifically attributed to climate change. In southern India and parts of Southeast Asia, individuals experienced sleep loss of 78 to 91 hours annually, with eight to nine hours due to climate change.
In West Africa, including countries like Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso, people also faced substantial sleep deficits, averaging over 65 hours per year, with 10 to 11 hours linked to climate change. These findings illustrate how vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected, underscoring the urgent need for targeted climate action.
The Situation in the United States
In the United States, the analysis focused on 253 cities, where the average loss was 36 hours of sleep per year, of which about four hours were directly related to climate change. The most affected areas included states like Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada. Alarmingly, climate change-related sleep loss in these cities has risen from just over one hour per year in the early 1970s to approximately four hours by the 2020s.
This increase in sleep deprivation poses significant health risks, as inadequate sleep is linked to detrimental effects on mood, cognitive function, productivity, and overall health. The analysis warns that even minor reductions in sleep can have severe consequences over time, particularly during prolonged hot seasons.
Vulnerable Populations at Greater Risk
Certain demographics face heightened risks from the effects of climate change on sleep. The report indicates that older adults, particularly those over 65, are more than twice as likely to be affected as their middle-aged counterparts. Additionally, individuals in lower-middle-income countries experience nearly three times the vulnerability compared to those in wealthier nations. Women and residents of already hot climates are also more susceptible, suggesting that sleep-related issues will likely worsen as global temperatures continue to rise.
The recent heatwave in Europe and the UK exemplifies these risks, contributing to thousands of excess deaths and highlighting the urgent need for awareness and action. In June alone, a study found that the heatwave led to a significant spike of 10,650 excess deaths across 27 European countries.
The Role of Air Conditioning and Inequality
Although air conditioning can mitigate some of the adverse effects of rising nighttime temperatures, it is not a comprehensive solution. Research indicates that access to cooling remains strikingly unequal. As of 2021, only about 35 per cent of households worldwide had air conditioning. This disparity is particularly pronounced in low-income regions, where access to cooling technologies is often tied to economic status.
In wealthier nations, even where air conditioning is more common, the persistent heat can still disrupt sleep patterns. The study’s reliance on data from higher-income populations suggests that the actual sleep losses in lower-income communities may be even more severe than reported.
