Climate Change Increases Risk of Snakebites, WHO Study Reveals

A recent study led by the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the threat of snakebites is escalating globally as climate change forces reptiles to adapt their habitats. The research indicates that rising temperatures and human encroachment are intensifying interactions between people and venomous snakes, potentially leading to a significant increase in snakebite incidents in the coming decades.

Rising Temperatures and Human Encroachment

The study highlights that various venomous snakes—including spitting cobras in Africa, vipers in Europe and South America, cottonmouth moccasins in North America, and kraits in Asia—are increasingly coming into contact with human populations due to climate-induced habitat shifts. As these reptiles migrate to escape the heat, it is projected that many will enter regions previously devoid of such dangerous species, placing millions at risk.

David Williams, one of the study’s authors from the WHO and the University of Melbourne, remarked, “The overlap between humans and venomous snakes will be greater. You could consider this a risk of walking out of the back door, stumbling and getting bitten.”

The statistics surrounding snakebites are difficult to ascertain due to their occurrence in remote areas, where many go unreported. Currently, it is estimated that around 4 million snakebite cases occur annually, predominantly in tropical regions. Though the majority of these incidents are not fatal, they result in approximately 138,000 deaths and 400,000 disabilities each year, with South Asia bearing a significant portion of the burden.

Mapping the Future of Snake Distribution

Published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, the research employed various data sources—ranging from public and private databases to citizen science inputs—to meticulously chart the habitats of all 508 medically significant snake species across the globe. This analysis projected how climate change will alter the spatial relationships between snakes and human populations by 2050 and 2090.

Mapping the Future of Snake Distribution

While many snake species are expected to face habitat decline due to rising temperatures and environmental degradation, some of the most dangerous snakes are anticipated to extend their range. For instance, the black mamba may retreat from coastal areas of Kenya but could expand into parts of South Africa and Nigeria.

Moreover, the study predicts that certain species may encroach on densely populated areas. Cottonmouth moccasins are projected to move northward into regions like New York, while kraits may migrate from Myanmar into China’s urban centres. In India, where around 60,000 snakebite fatalities are recorded annually, venomous species are expected to shift from southern to northern areas, exposing more individuals to the risk of bites.

Implications for Public Health

The implications of these findings are particularly concerning for vulnerable populations in impoverished regions, where individuals often work barefoot in fields and lack access to immediate healthcare. In contrast, countries like Australia, despite having numerous venomous snakes, maintain low mortality rates due to better access to medical facilities and preventive measures.

The research underscores the necessity for health authorities to adapt their strategies in anticipation of these changes. The authors suggest that the insights gained from this study could inform the allocation of resources for antivenoms, improve healthcare accessibility in at-risk communities, and guide conservation efforts for endangered snake species.
