This loss, quantified in a study surveying over 1,300 cities globally, highlights a critical intersection between environmental shifts and public health, urging immediate attention to the implications of warmer nights.
A Global Perspective on Sleep Deprivation
The comprehensive study examined data from 1,338 cities worldwide, focusing on the period from 2020 to 2025. On average, individuals lost approximately 56 hours of sleep annually due to increased ambient nighttime temperatures, with over six hours specifically attributable to climate change. This marks a significant escalation in sleep loss, which has more than doubled since the early 1970s across the majority of cities analysed. Alarmingly, the report asserts that in 840 of the cities surveyed, the climate-related portion of sleep deprivation has tripled.
Cities in the Middle East were identified as the most severely impacted regions. Residents in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates reported an annual sleep deficit ranging from 55 to 87 hours, with about 12 to 16 of those hours directly linked to climate change. Similarly, inhabitants of southern India and several Southeast Asian nations experienced losses between 78 and 91 hours per year, with 8 to 9 hours attributable to climate shifts. In West Africa, particularly in Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso, individuals lost upwards of 65 hours of sleep annually, with 10 to 11 hours connected to climate change.
The American Context
In the United States, the analysis of 253 cities revealed that the average person lost about 36 hours of sleep each year due to higher nighttime temperatures, with roughly four of those hours linked to climate change. The most affected areas include states like Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada. Notably, this increase in climate-related sleep loss has grown from just over one hour per year in the early 1970s to approximately four hours by the 2020s.
The implications of this accumulating sleep deficit are profound. Scientific research has established a clear connection between poor sleep and various health issues, including mood disturbances, cognitive decline, reduced productivity, and adverse effects on cardiovascular and immune systems. While air conditioning can mitigate some of the adverse effects of increased nighttime temperatures, it does not offer a complete solution. The study highlights stark inequalities in access to cooling systems, noting that only about 35% of households globally had air conditioning as of 2021. This lack of access is often tied to income disparities, particularly in hotter regions of South Asia and Africa. Even in higher-income settings, the prevalence of hotter nights continues to disrupt sleep patterns, suggesting that the issue extends beyond mere availability of cooling technology.
