The Impact of Rising Night Temperatures
The study, which surveyed 1,338 cities around the globe, highlights that over six hours of this sleep deficit—equivalent to one full night—can be directly linked to climate change. This represents a stark increase in climate-related sleep loss, which has at least doubled since the early 1970s, affecting 1,335 of the cities examined. In a staggering 840 cities, this trend has tripled, raising critical concerns about the implications for public health and well-being.
In regions such as the Middle East, the effects are particularly severe. Citizens in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the UAE are experiencing annual sleep losses ranging from 55 to 87 hours, with 12 to 16 hours directly attributable to climate change. Similarly, residents of southern India and various Southeast Asian nations report losing between 78 and 91 hours of sleep each year, including eight to nine hours linked to increased nighttime temperatures.
Disparities in Sleep Loss
The analysis further underscores the disparities in sleep deprivation based on geographic and socioeconomic factors. In the United States, residents in 253 cities reported an average loss of 36 hours of sleep annually due to high nighttime temperatures, with around four hours directly resulting from climate change. The states hardest hit include Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada. Notably, climate-related sleep loss in these cities has tripled since the 1970s, illustrating an urgent need for awareness and action.
The study also reveals that older adults face more significant threats from rising temperatures, with the impact on those over 65 being more than twice as pronounced as for middle-aged adults. Additionally, individuals in lower-middle-income countries experience nearly three times the effects of their counterparts in wealthier nations. The findings indicate that women and residents of already hot climates are particularly vulnerable, suggesting that the situation will only worsen as global temperatures continue to rise.
Health Consequences of Sleep Deprivation

This year, heatwaves in Europe and the UK have already been linked to thousands of excess deaths. An analysis of mortality data from 27 European countries indicated that extreme heat contributed to approximately 10,650 additional fatalities between June 22 and 28. As climate change exacerbates these conditions, the connection between sleep disruption and health crises will likely become more pronounced.
Access to Cooling Solutions
While air conditioning can mitigate some effects of rising nighttime temperatures, it is not a panacea. The research highlights that globally, only around 35 per cent of households had access to air conditioning as of 2021. Furthermore, access to cooling solutions tends to correlate with income, leaving many in vulnerable populations—particularly in lower-income regions of South Asia and Africa—facing greater risks.
Even in affluent countries where cooling solutions are more readily available, hotter nights still pose a threat to sleep quality. The study’s methodology, which relied heavily on data from higher-income nations, suggests that the actual sleep deficits suffered by lower-income populations may be significantly understated.
