Recent findings reveal that human-induced climate change has significantly increased the likelihood of the extreme conditions that sparked devastating wildfires across France and Spain. The World Weather Attribution group published a study indicating that these scorching, arid, and windy circumstances are at least twice as probable in south-western France and a staggering twenty times more likely in central Spain due to global warming.
A Catastrophic Season
Since early July, wildfires have ravaged parts of both nations, leading to the destruction of thousands of homes and displacing over 250,000 individuals. These fires have been described as some of the most severe in recorded history, with approximately 140,000 hectares consumed in Spain and 115,000 in France—a land area larger than the Isle of Wight for each country. Some of these infernos have been so intense that they have generated their own weather systems, complicating containment efforts. As forecasts predict continued soaring temperatures in the coming days, the threat remains dire.
Understanding the Risk
The research team analysed the seven-day period of extreme fire weather in the most affected regions, utilising the Daily Severity Rating—a metric that assesses fire difficulty based on temperature, dryness, wind, and terrain. By comparing this year’s conditions to historical data and simulated pre-industrial climates, the researchers concluded that such severe fire weather now occurs roughly once every 20 years in south-western France and every six years in central Spain. This alarming trend indicates that what was once a rare event has now become a recurring hazard.
The scientists also identified a troubling pattern that heightens the fire risk: wet winters followed by dry springs and summers. While winter rainfall promotes plant growth, the subsequent heat transforms this vegetation into ample fuel for wildfires.
The Human Element
Clair Barnes, a researcher at Imperial College London’s Centre for Environmental Policy and a co-author of the study, expressed her concern, stating, “A wet winter, followed by this intensely dry summer and a succession of heatwaves, has left forests loaded with dry fuel.” She emphasised the unprecedented nature of this season’s fires, noting that they are occurring alarmingly early in the year. “Every fraction of a degree of warming pushes us into unknown territory, and these fires show exactly what that risk looks like.”
In addition to the immediate dangers posed by the flames, the smoke has permeated extensive areas, with air quality in Bordeaux deteriorating to about twenty times the acceptable limit for fine particle pollution in Europe. Nearly 100,000 individuals in Spain faced home confinement due to hazardous air quality, and two towns near Madrid endured lockdowns for several days. In response, France’s national stockpile of FFP2 masks was made available in pharmacies for the first time during this air pollution crisis.
An Urgent Call to Action
Augustin Colette of the French National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks underscored the compounded risks of climate change, stating, “This summer 2026 sequence of compounding climate risks should be an eye-opener for the upcoming adaptation challenges and motivate ambitious climate action.”
Friederike Otto, a professor of climate science at Imperial College London and a co-founder of WWA, highlighted a troubling trend: “Our studies time and again show how Europe’s climate is shifting faster than governments are adapting.” The destructive pattern of wildfires we are witnessing is not an isolated incident; it is a consequence of the relentless burning of fossil fuels, which continues to fuel climate change.
Gareth Redmond-King from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit remarked, “Climate change doesn’t light the spark for wildfires, but it certainly provides the fuel.” He noted that the ongoing combustion of fossil fuels is exacerbating the crisis, creating conditions for increasingly deadly wildfires.
