A startling new analysis reveals that climate change is stealing precious hours of sleep from individuals worldwide, with the average person losing almost 56 hours each year due to elevated nighttime temperatures. This research, conducted by the climate science organisation Climate Central, highlights the severe and escalating impact of climate change on sleep quality, linking more than six hours of this loss directly to human-induced climate warming.
Rising Nighttime Temperatures and Sleep Loss
The comprehensive study examined data from 1,338 cities across the globe, focusing on the period from 2020 to 2025. It found that the effect of climate change on sleep has intensified significantly since the early 1970s, with the proportion of sleep lost to climate factors at least doubling in 1,335 cities and tripling in 840 of them.
The analysis underscores a troubling trend: as global temperatures rise, the ability to enjoy a restful night’s sleep diminishes. “Climate change and nighttime warming are increasingly impinging on the ability to get a good night’s sleep,” the report states, revealing that the average sleep loss due to climate change is not just a distant threat but a present reality for millions.
In the Middle East, the situation is particularly dire. Residents of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates suffer sleep losses ranging from 55 to 87 hours annually, with a staggering 12 to 16 of those hours attributable to climate change—equivalent to nearly two additional nights of lost sleep each year.
Global Disparities in Sleep Loss
Southern India and various Southeast Asian nations are facing similar challenges, with individuals losing between 78 and 91 hours of sleep annually, including eight to nine hours linked to climate change. In West Africa, countries such as Niger, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso report losses exceeding 65 hours yearly, with 10 to 11 hours directly connected to rising temperatures.
In the United States, the impact of climate change on sleep is also pronounced. An analysis of 253 cities showed that residents lost an average of 36 hours of sleep annually due to higher nighttime temperatures, with approximately four hours specifically attributed to climate change. Cities in Arizona, California, Florida, and Nevada recorded the highest losses. Alarmingly, climate-related sleep loss in the US has tripled since the 1970s, growing from just over one hour per year to four hours in the current decade.
Health Consequences of Sleep Deprivation
The implications of these sleep losses are profound. Scientists warn that insufficient sleep can adversely affect mental health, cognitive function, productivity, and even cardiovascular and immune system health. “Because many individuals already experience inadequate sleep, even modest reductions can become detrimental over the course of a hot season,” the analysis warns.
Certain demographics are particularly vulnerable. For instance, older adults aged over 65 are subjected to sleep loss effects more than twice as severe as those experienced by middle-aged individuals. Additionally, people living in lower-middle-income countries face almost three times the risk compared to their counterparts in wealthier nations. Women and those residing in already hot climates are also at greater risk, with predictions suggesting that heat-related sleep deprivation will worsen as temperatures continue to rise.
The Role of Air Conditioning and Accessibility Issues
While air conditioning can mitigate some of the adverse effects of high nighttime temperatures, it does not provide a complete solution. The research highlights a stark reality: globally, only around 35 per cent of households had access to air conditioning as of 2021. The availability of cooling solutions is often tied to income, creating a significant disparity in access, particularly in hot regions of South Asia and Africa. Even in higher-income settings, where cooling is more prevalent, warmer nights can still disrupt sleep patterns.
The analysis utilised data on daily minimum temperatures alongside theoretical temperature models—estimating what conditions would be without climate change—over a six-year period and compared these findings to historical data from the early 1970s. This approach underscores not only the immediate effects of climate change on sleep but also indicates a troubling long-term trend.

As sleep deprivation becomes increasingly intertwined with rising global temperatures, the impact on mental and physical health cannot be overstated.
