In a harrowing incident on Monday, Canadian National Railway (CN) train operators found themselves fleeing on foot from rampant wildfires in Northwestern Ontario. The crew abandoned their locomotive, which was engulfed by flames while they were halted on a sidetrack near Armstrong, Ont. Video footage shared on social media captured the urgency of the moment, with one crew member declaring, “We are encased in flames.” Although the crew managed to escape, they later required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation.
Investigation Launched by Federal Authorities
Transport Canada is now scrutinising the events that led to this alarming situation, with spokesperson Hicham Ayoun confirming the ministry’s commitment to ensuring railway safety. The federal agency is conducting a review to ascertain whether any breaches of the Railway Safety Act occurred in this incident. Additionally, officials from Transport Canada will collaborate with Employment and Social Development Canada to investigate potential violations of the Canadian Labour Code, which regulates health and safety standards in federally overseen workplaces.
Ayoun stated, “Transport Canada will not hesitate to implement operational restrictions or protective measures when necessary,” emphasising the seriousness of the situation. This inquiry follows a statement from the Transportation Safety Board, which has begun gathering details about the incident but has not yet outlined any specific next steps.
Wildfires Affecting Communities

Teamsters Canada, the union representing the workers, reported that the first rescue vehicle dispatched to retrieve the crew was forced to turn back due to the advancing flames. According to Marc-André Gauthier, a spokesperson for the union, the rescuers and the two operators had to run for a distance of one to two miles to evade the fire, highlighting the extreme danger they faced. Gauthier remarked, “It’s outrageous that they had to go through that. But the train should not have been there in the first place. When there’s an active forest fire, you just don’t send a train there.”
CN Rail’s Response
In response to inquiries, CN has not provided clarity on why the train was in the area during such hazardous conditions. However, CN spokesperson Ashley Michnowski acknowledged the perilous circumstances faced by the crew, stating, “Our railroaders were faced with an extremely dangerous and challenging situation during the recent wildfires in Northern Ontario. We commend them for the courage and professionalism they demonstrated during such a horrific event.”
Gauthier noted that train operators often endure lengthy waits on sidings for other trains to pass, and he was uncertain how long the train involved in the wildfire had been stationary. “This is when the fire caught up to them,” he explained. “It was a very bad situation.”
