Coffee and Fruit: Key Ingredients in the Recipe for Healthy Ageing, Study Reveals

New research indicates that incorporating a modest amount of coffee and several servings of fruit into one’s daily diet may significantly reduce the risk of unhealthy cellular ageing. A recent study highlights that these food choices could halve the likelihood of experiencing short telomeres, which are associated with various age-related diseases.

The Study: Insights into Cellular Ageing

Conducted by researchers at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, the study examined telomere lengths in over 1,700 adults, assessing their dietary habits over a span of several years. Telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes, play a critical role in cellular health, with shorter telomeres linked to increased risks of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.

Presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Istanbul, the findings revealed that participants who consumed the highest amounts of polyphenols—antioxidant-rich compounds found in foods like coffee, berries, apples, and tea—exhibited a 52% lower risk of having short telomeres compared to those with the lowest intake. Specifically, moderate coffee consumption (up to one cup per day) was associated with a 26% reduction in this risk, while those who indulged in four to five portions of fruit daily saw a 29% decrease.

Polyphenols are well-known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, contributing to overall health and potentially staving off age-related illnesses. Isabella Kury Guzmán, the lead author of the study, emphasised that these findings suggest a broader dietary approach to ageing. “Our results indicate that a diet rich in polyphenols, including fruits and coffee, may be essential for promoting healthier cellular ageing. This isn’t about pinpointing a single ‘anti-ageing’ food, but rather recognising the cumulative impact of our daily dietary choices,” she noted.

While other polyphenol-rich foods such as olive oil, red wine, and various vegetables were not shown to have a direct effect on telomere length in this particular study, their overall health benefits are widely recognised.

Ana Rodriguez-Mateos, a professor of human nutrition at King’s College London, remarked that the link between polyphenols and reduced risk of age-related diseases, including cognitive decline and cardiovascular issues, is becoming increasingly clear. “Clinical studies indicate that these compounds can lower blood pressure and enhance blood vessel and brain functionality as we age. This study reinforces the notion that diets rich in polyphenols may lead to healthier ageing,” she said.

However, Gunter Kuhnle, a professor of nutrition at the University of Reading, cautioned against drawing definitive conclusions. “While it’s not surprising that a diet abundant in fruits and vegetables has health benefits, accurately measuring polyphenol intake is quite complex. It’s challenging to determine whether the observed healthier ageing is solely due to polyphenols or the broader effects of consuming a healthy diet rich in plant-based foods.”
