The seismic event, which struck on 10 August 2026 at 07:34 local time, has prompted a state of emergency and raised fears of a rising death toll as rescue operations continue. The quake’s epicentre was located near the village of San José del Palmar in Chocó province, with its tremors felt widely throughout the western regions of the country.

The earthquake, occurring at a depth of 103km (64 miles), devastated several cities, notably Pereira, situated in Colombia’s renowned coffee-growing area. Local authorities reported that Pereira experienced severe structural damage, with 65 buildings collapsing and significant casualties emerging in its metropolitan vicinity. “We could feel the ground shake beneath us,” recounted Dan Cutler, a British traveller currently in Cali, approximately 160km from Pereira. “It was an experience I’ll never forget,” he added, noting that while his hotel sustained minor damage, the tremors left an indelible mark on the local community.

The tremors from the earthquake resonated throughout Colombia and were felt as far away as Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama. The Colombian government has mobilised emergency services and declared a national disaster, granting President Abelardo de la Espriella extensive powers to coordinate the response.
