Buddy the Cayuga duck has made himself at home along the shores of Lake Summerside in south Edmonton, but his presence raises concerns about his well-being. Having appeared in the area approximately three months ago, Buddy initially went unnoticed by residents. However, after a fishing lure incident led to a local wildlife rescue inquiry, the situation has become more urgent.
Buddy’s Arrival and Initial Concerns
Kim Livingston, office manager of the Lake Summerside Residents Association, has been observing Buddy’s behaviour since he arrived. “He seems pretty happy, he seems pretty healthy,” she noted, but the reality is that Buddy is far from where he truly belongs. After becoming ensnared in a fishing lure, his predicament drew the attention of local wildlife advocates.
Livingston reached out to Wild North, a local wildlife rescue organisation, hoping they could assist Buddy. “I called and asked Wild North if they would take him, as I was concerned about the hook in his bill,” she explained. Unfortunately, the organisation informed her that they were unable to help due to Buddy being a domestic breed.
A Duck Out of Water: Understanding Buddy’s Breed
Buddy is a Cayuga duck, a breed that originated in New York between the 1830s and 1850s. This breed, developed from a wild black duck and other domestic breeds, is known for its hardiness in cold weather. However, Alberta’s harsh winters pose a significant threat to Buddy, especially since he cannot fly, leaving him vulnerable as temperatures drop.
“He can’t take off from here, so he’s stuck,” Livingston stated. “Not only will he not survive in the winter without shelter, I did read that even though he’s foraging in the lake, he’s not getting the proper nutrition.” This raises alarms for both his immediate safety and long-term survival.
Temporary Solutions and the Search for a Permanent Home
Currently, Buddy is being provided with waterfowl food three times daily, a stopgap measure to ensure he receives adequate nutrition. Amidst these efforts, a potential new home has been identified for him, complete with other ducks and geese. However, the challenge lies in persuading Buddy to leave his lakefront abode.
Efforts to catch Buddy have proven to be a test of patience and ingenuity. “We spent about two hours trying to catch him,” Livingston recounted. “He outsmarted us every time.” To aid in the relocation process, an expert bird catcher has been enlisted to assist in the coming days.

As the situation unfolds, residents and visitors to Lake Summerside are being urged to respect Buddy’s space. With community members actively engaged in his care, there is hope that Buddy will soon find a more suitable environment.
