Between June 24 and July 24, the carcasses of these majestic creatures were discovered, prompting an immediate investigation by wildlife authorities. Preliminary tests conducted by KWS found traces of cyanide in the stomach contents of some elephants, indicating possible poisoning. Dr. Isaac Lekolool, the chief veterinarian at KWS, stated that while they are exploring the pesticide theory, it remains difficult to ascertain the exact cause of death, noting, “It’s almost like a one-off incident, and it was within a period of about a month.”
This incident has not only raised concerns among conservationists but has also left local farmers questioning the circumstances leading to such a rare occurrence. Daniel Nina, a representative for landowners in the area, expressed his disbelief, saying, “We have lived alongside this wildlife for decades and have never seen anything like this.”
The Role of Agriculture
The elephant deaths have been linked to tomato farms located in the Kimana area, situated within a critical wildlife corridor that connects Amboseli National Park with Tsavo National Park. These farms benefit from the streams fed by Mount Kilimanjaro, making them fertile grounds for agriculture that supplies markets in Nairobi and beyond.
However, the potential misuse of harmful chemicals poses a significant threat not only to wildlife but also to the environment and human health. A report from 2024 by the Kenyan food safety initiative Route to Food highlighted the alarming presence of toxic agrochemicals, including those containing cyanide, that are smuggled across the border from Tanzania. Wangunyu Njuguna, the report’s author, pointed out, “The biggest problem is we’re not enforcing similar standards in the region.”

Paula Kahumbu, a renowned conservationist with three decades of experience working with elephants, commented, “We haven’t got enough detailed information to have confidence in this claim that it’s due to pesticides in crops.”
Experts have also raised concerns about the behaviour of the elephants involved. Typically, male elephants are more prone to raid farms, yet in this instance, only one of the deceased elephants was an adult male. This discrepancy has led some to question the validity of the pesticide theory, particularly since prior poisoning incidents have primarily affected zebras and antelopes, which share the same grazing areas.
The Bigger Picture: Human-Wildlife Conflict
The incident highlights a persistent issue of human-wildlife conflict in Kenya, particularly in regions bordering conservation areas. Stephen Michael, a tomato farmer from Kimana, recounted the damage caused by elephants and giraffes to his crops, stating, “The last time elephants came, they destroyed cabbages and tomatoes. I lost cabbages worth almost $1,535.”
Frank Pope, CEO of Save the Elephants, emphasised that the pressure on Amboseli’s elephants is shifting away from poaching for ivory to land use conflicts. “Farms and lodges are increasingly taking up land around the park, which was previously used by elephants,” he explained. This encroachment intensifies competition for resources and heightens the risk of conflict between wildlife and local communities.
