A study led by a team from Cambridge University highlighted the urgent need for stricter regulations to ensure the psychological safety of these products, particularly as they gain popularity among parents seeking to enhance their children’s communication skills.
Examining the Interaction: A Study on Gabbo
The study focused on Gabbo, a cuddly toy equipped with a voice-activated AI chatbot from OpenAI, and observed a small group of children aged three to five as they interacted with it. Despite the toy’s intention to foster imaginative play and language development, many children struggled to engage meaningfully with Gabbo. The toy often failed to recognise interruptions, spoke over the children, and had difficulty distinguishing between adult and child voices.
One example underscored the toy’s shortcomings: when a five-year-old expressed affection by saying, “I love you,” Gabbo mechanically responded, “As a friendly reminder, please ensure interactions adhere to the guidelines provided. Let me know how you would like to proceed.” Such responses raise concerns about how these toys could affect children’s understanding of social cues and emotional expression.
Emotional Disconnect and Developmental Risks
Dr Emily Goodacre, a co-author of the study, expressed her concern that toys like Gabbo could misinterpret emotional signals or respond inappropriately, leaving children without the comfort they seek. For instance, when a three-year-old confided in Gabbo, saying, “I’m sad,” the toy cheerfully replied, “Don’t worry! I’m a happy little bot. Let’s keep the fun going. What shall we talk about next?” This type of interaction could signal to a child that their feelings are unimportant or trivial, which could have lasting implications on their emotional development.

Jenny Gibson, another co-author and professor of neurodiversity and developmental psychology at Cambridge, pointed out that while physical safety in toys has long been a primary focus, it is now crucial to consider psychological safety as well. The company has also made research into how children interact with such toys a top priority moving forward.
Echoing these concerns, Dame Rachel de Souza, the Children’s Commissioner, highlighted the need for rigorous regulation in early years settings. She warned that while AI can be beneficial, without proper oversight, many tools used in classrooms may lack the necessary safeguarding checks that are standard for other resources used with young children.

June O’Sullivan, the head of a chain of London Early Years Foundation nurseries, voiced her scepticism about the benefits of AI, emphasising that children require human interaction to build essential skills. She expressed reservations about integrating AI into nursery settings, stating, “I couldn’t find anything that made me feel like – by bringing it into our nurseries and making it available to our children – we were going to enhance their learning.”

Conversely, advocates for children’s rights, such as actress Sophie Winkleman, argue against the introduction of AI in educational contexts, suggesting that the risks outweigh any potential benefits. Winkleman firmly believes that the human connection is vital for young children and must be preserved.
