A Leger survey reveals that while 44 per cent of Canadians support AI data centres in their provinces, 42 per cent stand in opposition. Yize Chen, an assistant professor at the University of Alberta’s electrical and computer engineering department, noted the advantages of Alberta’s cold climate in reducing energy consumption, particularly in cooling data centres. “It definitely brings us a lot of benefits for computing and industry development, but at the same time, we need to be cautious of the outcomes,” Chen stated, emphasising the necessity for a balanced approach as the province embraces this burgeoning sector.

Residents near proposed sites in Olds, Wheatland County, and the Grande Prairie region have expressed opposition, fearing the potential negative impact on their environment and quality of life. Glubish acknowledged these anxieties, asserting that the province has undertaken extensive measures to ensure responsible development. “We did our homework, and now we’re ready to build responsibly into the future,” he asserted.

In a similar vein, Manitoba recently rejected a hyperscale data centre proposal due to environmental concerns, illustrating the growing scrutiny surrounding such projects. The contrasting responses from different provinces raise questions about the balance between technological advancement and environmental stewardship.

The Leger poll reflects a broader trend of public wariness regarding AI data centres, particularly as they become more prevalent across Canada. Methodologically, the survey, conducted from July 10 to 13, 2026, included 1,505 Canadian residents aged 18 and older and was weighted to provide a representative sample. While the margin of error for non-probability samples cannot be specified, a probability sample of this size would suggest a margin of error of ±2.53%, 19 times out of 20.

Pollsters suggest that as data centre developments become more commonplace, public perceptions may shift—either positively or negatively—depending on the outcomes of these initiatives.
