In a bold move, child safety advocacy groups have urged the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to scrutinise Roblox, the immensely popular gaming platform that has captured the hearts of young gamers worldwide. Allegations of “unfair and deceptive” practices have emerged, with campaigners highlighting significant risks posed to children, including unsolicited contact from strangers and excessive spending on virtual items.
The Calls for Action
The complaint, filed by organisations such as Fairplay and the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation, raises pressing issues about the way Roblox operates, particularly its in-game purchases and chat functionalities. With children as young as five potentially exposed to these dangers, the groups are seeking a formal investigation into the platform’s practices.
Roblox has firmly rejected these claims, asserting that its focus is on fostering a fun and connected experience rather than merely boosting short-term engagement. A spokesperson emphasised the platform’s commitment to safety, touting “clear policies” against gambling and regulations on random paid items. Notably, they pointed out that a mere 1.4% of their 132 million daily active users engaged in paid transactions in the first quarter of 2026, suggesting that the majority of players enjoy the game without spending.
Spending and Engagement Worries
The concerns centre around Roblox’s in-game economy, particularly its virtual currency, Robux. Campaigners argue that the system is convoluted, making it difficult for children and their parents to grasp the real-world costs associated with virtual purchases. A striking example highlighted in the complaint involved a parent whose ten-year-old daughter racked up over $7,000 (£5,200) in two months, despite attempts to limit her spending.
Moreover, the complaint posits that the platform employs “engagement-maximising” design elements, such as daily rewards and social comparisons, which keep children hooked. Features reminiscent of gambling, such as loot boxes and chance-based rewards, are also cited as problematic, with critics asserting that children may lack the understanding needed to navigate these features safely.
“Parents are doing everything they can to protect their children on Roblox, but it’s not a fair fight,” lamented Ashwin Verghese, communications director at Fairplay. He believes that the platform preys on children’s vulnerabilities, particularly regarding impulse control and peer pressure, and insists that parents deserve assurance about their children’s safety online.
Communication Features Under Fire
Another significant aspect of the complaint focuses on Roblox’s communication tools. Despite existing safety protocols, the groups argue that text and voice chat systems expose children to inappropriate content and unwanted contact from adults. Researchers using accounts for users under 13 reported encountering sexual references and offensive language within moments of entering various games.
The filing also drew attention to alarming instances of grooming and exploitation, calling into question the effectiveness of Roblox’s safety measures. The platform boasted a staggering revenue of $4.9 billion (£3.7 billion) in 2025, reflecting a 36% increase from the previous year—an indicator of its widespread popularity and, potentially, the scale of its influence on young players.
As gaming and social media platforms face increasing scrutiny over their practices, the FTC has yet to announce whether it will initiate a formal investigation. The heightened focus on how these platforms protect young users and generate revenue could lead to significant changes in the industry.
The Need for Greater Awareness
Drew Benvie, CEO of social media consultancy Battenhall and founder of the youth safety nonprofit Raise, stressed that while Roblox is implementing new age-based protections, these measures alone may not suffice. “Young gamers are digital escape artists who easily bypass safety features,” he noted, emphasising the need for increased awareness among parents regarding the potential impacts of social features in games. He advocates for comprehensive legislative reforms to address the addictive nature of gaming, rather than merely relying on age restrictions.
Why it Matters
The ongoing dialogue about child safety in gaming is crucial, particularly as platforms like Roblox become increasingly ingrained in children’s lives. The potential for exploitation and the risks associated with virtual spending should not be overlooked. As regulators and advocacy groups push for greater accountability, parents must remain vigilant, ensuring that their children can enjoy gaming experiences without falling prey to the darker side of digital play. The outcome of this situation could reshape how online platforms operate, prioritising the safety and well-being of their youngest users.
