In a joint statement released on Wednesday, the attorneys general revealed that they are seeking documents from FIFA to scrutinise its pricing strategies for matches at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. They express concerns that fans may have been misled about the actual locations of the seats they were purchasing, which could have contributed to inflated ticket prices.
“Transparency in ticket sales should not be a complex issue,” Davenport remarked. “However, FIFA has transformed the process of acquiring tickets for the World Cup into a confusing ordeal marked by artificial scarcity and exorbitant costs, ultimately harming consumers, especially hardworking residents of New Jersey.”
Fans Struggling to Secure Affordable Tickets
The issue resonates deeply with fans across North America, notably in Canada, where many are struggling to afford tickets for the World Cup. Vancouver resident Shushan Lily Vardanyan shared her frustrations, stating, “Tickets we’ve found are priced between $800 and $1,000 each, which is a heavy burden for a family of three.”
Vardanyan expressed her fears regarding potential scams from individual ticket vendors due to the high cost and limited availability. “For families with modest incomes, these prices are simply unreasonable. Soccer is traditionally known for its inclusivity and accessibility, and it feels disheartening to be left out of such an exciting event,” she lamented.
Vardanyan supports the ongoing investigation in the US and hopes that Canadian authorities will take similar action. “There should be an inquiry into this situation to ensure transparency, reflecting the values of the country hosting the tournament.”
Ticket Prices in Focus
When ticket sales commenced in January, prices ranged from approximately US$140 to $8,680. Since then, ticket availability has been inconsistent, with some tickets being offered at lower prices while others have skyrocketed, reaching a staggering $32,970 for final match tickets. FIFA has also garnered criticism for profiting from its resale marketplace, where it imposes a 30% commission on each ticket sold. In a shocking instance, four tickets to the final were listed for nearly $2.3 million each.
Fans have voiced their discontent, accusing FIFA of betrayal over its pricing methods. Despite the backlash, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended the ticket costs, stating, “We must consider market conditions. In Ontario, new legislation has been enacted to cap resale ticket prices at face value for the World Cup, preventing excessive markups. This means that anyone who purchased a resale ticket above its original price may face financial losses if they attempt to resell it.
