In a decisive move, Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, has called on the federal government to officially designate the Iran-backed militant group, Kata’ib Hezbollah, as a terrorist entity. This request follows serious allegations linking a member of the group to an attack on a Canadian synagogue and a shooting incident at the U.S. consulate in Toronto earlier this year.

In a letter addressed to Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, Poilievre cited findings from American authorities that suggest Kata’ib Hezbollah is involved in orchestrating attacks on Canadian soil. Specifically, he referenced Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, an Iraqi national identified as a commander of the group. Al-Saadi was presented in a Federal Court in Manhattan in May, facing accusations of plotting at least 18 terrorist attacks across Europe and North America. Notably, two of those alleged attacks occurred in Canada: one targeting a synagogue and the other involving gunfire directed at the U.S. consulate in March.
