Canada’s Conservative Party leader, Pierre Poilievre, has called on the federal government to officially designate the Iran-backed militant group, Kata’ib Hezbollah, as a terrorist entity. In a letter addressed to Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, Poilievre cited findings from U.S. authorities that link Kata’ib Hezbollah and its alleged commander, Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, to planned attacks within Canada. The Iraqi national, who appeared in a Federal Court in Manhattan earlier this year, is accused of orchestrating at least 18 terror attacks across Europe and North America as retaliation for ongoing conflicts involving the U.S. and Israel with Iran.
The court proceedings revealed that two of those thwarted attacks were aimed at targets in Canada: one targeting a synagogue and another resulting in the shooting at the U.S. consulate. Al-Saadi is also facing charges related to conspiring to provide material support to both Kata’ib Hezbollah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, both of which have been classified as foreign terrorist organisations by the United States.

In his correspondence, Poilievre emphasised the necessity of taking swift action against such groups to protect Canadians. He argued that classifying Kata’ib Hezbollah as a terrorist entity would not only criminalise any dealings with the group’s finances or properties but also empower Canadian authorities to seize its assets.
“Canadians deserve a government that acts decisively to stop terrorists before they can strike,” Poilievre stated. “We should not wait for further tragedies, such as another attack on a synagogue or consulate, before taking necessary preventive measures against this organisation.”
