Emissions from the Jackdaw gas field, located in the North Sea, are being downplayed by its owner, Adura, as having “no material influence” on climate change, according to a newly released Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The report asserts that the gas field will contribute less than 0.02% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions throughout its operational life. The company claims this transition could save around four million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions, suggesting that gas sourced domestically would lead to approximately 20% lower emissions compared to imported alternatives. This reduction is attributed to the elimination of the emissions generated during the liquefaction, transportation, and regasification processes of imported LNG.

Adura further maintains that the environmental impact of the Jackdaw field will be “minor” due to the UK’s commitment to a well-regulated energy sector that aligns with the targets set forth by the Paris Agreement. This framework aims to limit global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius, with efforts to pursue a more ambitious 1.5-degree goal.
