A devastating hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius has resulted in three fatalities and left several others seriously ill, prompting urgent medical evacuations. Among the affected passengers are 23 Britons and 17 Americans, including American travel blogger Jake Rosmarin, who has shared his emotional response to the crisis while in isolation.
Tragic Developments Aboard the MV Hondius
The situation escalated rapidly after the ship departed Ushuaia in southern Argentina on 20 March, bound for Cape Verde. It was due to arrive on 4 May, but the emergence of the virus has led to a halt in the itinerary. Initial reports indicate that a 70-year-old Dutch man was the first to succumb after exhibiting severe symptoms, including fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. He tragically passed away shortly after arrival at St Helena, a British territory in the South Atlantic. His wife, also Dutch and aged 69, was subsequently evacuated to Johannesburg, where she, too, lost her battle against the virus. Additionally, a German national has been confirmed among the deceased.
Rosmarin, who boasts a significant following on social media, conveyed the gravity of the situation in a heartfelt Instagram video, stating, “We’re not just headlines: we’re people with families, with lives, with people waiting for us at home. There is a lot of uncertainty, and that is the hardest part.”
Evacuations Underway as Concerns Grow
Health officials are taking swift action, reportedly arranging for the evacuation of two passengers displaying symptoms of the hantavirus. The ship owner, Oceanwide Expeditions, has confirmed that while the outbreak is severe, only one case of hantavirus has been officially confirmed so far, that of a British man currently receiving treatment in South Africa.
As the health crisis unfolded, authorities in Cape Verde denied the ship permission to dock, citing precautionary measures. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has assessed the risk to the general public as low, emphasising that there is no immediate cause for panic or travel restrictions.
