CuspAI Secures £2bn Investment from Jeff Bezos and UK Government to Revolutionise Material Discovery for Chipmakers

In an exciting development for the tech industry, British startup CuspAI has successfully attracted a staggering £2 billion in investment, with contributions from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and the UK government. This Cambridge-based artificial intelligence firm is set to transform the landscape of material discovery, aiming to become the go-to “search engine for rare materials” that could facilitate groundbreaking advancements in technology.

CuspAI’s Ambitious Vision

CuspAI, now boasting a valuation of approximately $2.6 billion, has raised $450 million (£330 million) in funding from various investors, including the government’s sovereign AI fund. The company is on a mission to expedite research times while reducing reliance on rare metals such as iridium and ruthenium, which are often key components in chip manufacturing.

To achieve this, CuspAI has launched the AI Materials Foundry—a coalition comprising over 48 tech firms, industrial enterprises, and research institutions. Notable members include the semiconductor giant Nvidia, social media behemoth Meta Platforms, and automotive leader Hyundai. This collective aims to leverage cutting-edge AI technologies to uncover new materials that could enhance the efficiency of energy networks and batteries, thereby driving the semiconductor industry forward.

The Power of AI in Material Discovery

Dr Chad Edwards and Professor Max Welling, co-founders of CuspAI, emphasise a pressing issue: “If we don’t make progress fast, the next 50 years of industrial progress will be constrained by a single challenge: the world needs materials that don’t yet exist.” Their vision combines advanced AI techniques with deep domain expertise and exclusive data access to pioneer the development of materials that have not yet been discovered.

The recent Series B funding round will enable CuspAI to expand its operations internationally, with plans to open a new office in Singapore and hire additional personnel in key cities such as Cambridge, Amsterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, and across the United States. Josh Coyne, a partner at Kleiner Perkins, a venture capital firm that co-led the funding round, stated, “Most big leaps in technology come down to a material, and the next set, from cheaper carbon capture to semiconductors and cleaner water, is stuck waiting on materials nobody has discovered yet. CuspAI built a search engine that changes that.”

Supporting British Innovation

CuspAI is also notable for being the fourth company to secure funding from the UK government’s initiative aimed at bolstering early-stage British AI firms. This fund typically invests between £1 million and £10 million in startups that maintain a primary office in the UK and have British founders. The government has not disclosed the exact investment amount for CuspAI, but its support underscores a commitment to fostering innovation in the AI sector.

Liz Kendall, the UK Secretary of State for Science and Technology, commented on the venture’s potential impact, stating, “CuspAI is putting the power of AI to work to help us tackle some of the biggest challenges facing the UK and the world today, such as energy and climate change. By backing British companies such as this, we are paving the way for breakthroughs that are set to grow our economy, protect the natural world, and improve everyone’s lives.”

CuspAI has also strengthened its team with the addition of John Giannandrea, a former executive from tech giants Apple and Google, who will assist in establishing the company’s operations in the US. Furthermore, the startup is collaborating with Abhi Talwalkar, a board member at chip maker AMD and chair of Lam Research, to ensure its initiatives are aligned with industry needs.
