The findings reveal a troubling reality: rather than lowering the barrier to entry for engaging in cybercrime, AI coding assistants are primarily benefiting those who already possess significant technical expertise. Effective utilisation of these AI tools requires a deep understanding of programming and cybersecurity, which many cybercriminals simply do not have.

Interestingly, the research highlighted that AI applications among cybercriminals are most successful in specific areas, such as orchestrating social media bots for misogynistic harassment and executing fraud schemes. Additionally, AI is being used to obscure patterns that could be flagged by cybersecurity professionals. However, the study also pointed out a silver lining: the safeguards implemented in major AI chatbots are proving effective in mitigating potential harms.

The report emphasises the importance of vigilance against the risks associated with “agentic AI systems”—AI that operates autonomously to perform tasks and make decisions. Additionally, the authors raise alarms about the potential dangers of “vibecoded” products, which are developed using AI-generated code but may lack robust security measures.

The findings of this research have been peer-reviewed and are set to be presented at the Workshop on the Economics of Information Security in Berkeley, US, this June.
