However, he acknowledged that the increase in testing due to heightened public awareness could skew the positivity statistics. “I’m feeling confident we’re heading in that direction, but we need to continue to monitor this as we go forward,” he stated.

Data from bioMerieux’s Syndromic Trends indicates that the positivity rate for illnesses involving parasites peaked at 15.6% in mid-July, a significant outlier compared to the 2.9% positivity rate observed during the same period in 2025. Nevertheless, Osiecki believes that the societal shift towards avoiding lettuce due to the outbreak could contribute to a genuine decline in new infections. He noted, “I’ve been in a lot of social settings, and I’ve heard people request not to have lettuce just because they’re aware of cyclospora.” This awareness is critical in mitigating the spread, but it also highlights the need for accurate and comprehensive data collection by health authorities.

Furthermore, bioMerieux’s testing panel, which screens for various gastrointestinal parasites, is only covered by Medicare for immunosuppressed patients, limiting access to the tests for broader populations. The cost of the test, which stands at $417, further complicates the ability of individuals, particularly in rural areas, to obtain timely diagnoses.
