A team of researchers from the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, conducted an extensive analysis of telomere length in more than 1,700 adults, measuring samples in both 2008 and 2015. Their findings were presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Istanbul, revealing a striking connection between diet and telomere length, which is crucial in cellular health. Short telomeres are associated with a heightened risk of age-related diseases, including cardiovascular issues, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
The study indicates that participants who consumed the highest amounts of polyphenols, primarily through fruits and coffee, had a remarkable 52% lower risk of possessing short telomeres compared to those with the least intake. Specifically, individuals who drank up to one cup of coffee daily exhibited a 26% reduced risk of having shorter telomeres, while those who consumed four to five servings of fruit per day saw a 29% decrease in risk.

This is not about one ‘anti-ageing’ food, but about the cumulative effect of everyday dietary choices over time,” she stated.

Experts in the field have reacted positively to the findings, with Ana Rodriguez-Mateos, a human nutrition professor at King’s College London, affirming that polyphenols are indeed linked to a lower risk of age-related diseases. “Clinical studies show that consumption of these compounds can lower blood pressure and support blood vessel and brain function as we age. This study adds to growing evidence that diets rich in polyphenols may support healthier ageing,” she said.
However, Gunter Kuhnle, a nutrition professor at the University of Reading, urged caution regarding the difficulty of accurately measuring polyphenol intake. “It is not surprising that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables has potential health benefits,” he noted. “But because plant-based foods are the main source of polyphenols, it is very difficult to distinguish whether that healthier ageing is due specifically to the polyphenols or the fact of eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables.”
