As tensions escalate between the United States and Denmark over the potential acquisition of Greenland, a growing number of Danes are taking a defiant stance against President Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoric. The unlikely symbol of this resistance? A red baseball cap bearing the slogan “Make America Go Away.”
The caps, which parody Trump’s famous “Make America Great Again” catchphrase, have surged in popularity across Denmark and Greenland in recent months. They were created by Copenhagen vintage clothing store owner Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, who initially struggled to sell the hats in 2024. However, following the Trump administration’s escalation of its rhetoric towards Greenland, demand for the caps has skyrocketed.
“When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realise this probably wasn’t a joke – it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality,” Tonnesen said. “So I said, ‘OK, what can I do?’ Can I communicate in a funny way with a good message and unite the Danes to show that Danish people support the people of Greenland?”
The caps feature a play on words, with the text “Nu det NUUK!” – a twist on the Danish phrase “Nu det nok,” meaning “Now it’s enough,” substituting Nuuk, Greenland’s tiny capital. Some were worn at a rally in Copenhagen on Saturday, where protesters waved Danish and Greenlandic flags and carried signs mocking US claims over the territory.
“I’m here to support the Greenlanders, who are going through a very hard time right now,” said protester Kristian Boye. “They are being threatened with having their country invaded. I think it’s totally unacceptable.”
The growing popularity of the “Make America Go Away” caps reflects a broader sense of defiance among Danes and Greenlanders against Trump’s aggressive posturing. European governments have rallied behind Denmark and Greenland, citing the need to defend Arctic regions and warning that Trump’s threats undermine Western security.
As the crisis over Greenland continues to simmer, the humble red cap has become a symbol of Danish and Greenlandic resistance, a lighthearted yet powerful statement against the US president’s ambitions. For many, it represents a refusal to back down in the face of external pressure and a determination to protect the sovereignty of the Nordic nation and its autonomous territory.
