A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Indonesia early on Saturday, resulting in at least 47 fatalities and numerous injuries, as confirmed by the country’s disaster management agency. The quake, which occurred at around 5:00 AM local time (22:00 GMT on Friday), has triggered a search and rescue operation amid reports of extensive damage across the eastern region, particularly on the island of Flores.

Impact and Casualties

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the earthquake’s epicentre was located at a depth of 15 kilometres, a factor that typically exacerbates surface damage. Following the initial tremor, the region experienced a series of aftershocks, including one of 6.1 magnitude, which further unsettled residents and added to the destruction.

Among the hardest-hit areas is Manggarai province, where 24 deaths have been recorded, alongside fatalities in East Manggarai, Sikka, Ngada, Ende, and West Manggarai. In total, at least 150 homes have sustained severe damage, alongside schools, healthcare facilities, and other public structures. The BNPB has indicated that two individuals sustained serious injuries, while 11 others experienced minor injuries.

Eyewitness Accounts

Residents described harrowing experiences during the quake. Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, the governor of East Nusa Tenggara province, noted that many victims tragically lost their lives while asleep as buildings collapsed around them. Arnold Welianto, a local resident from Talibura, recounted being abruptly awakened by the strong tremors and witnessing widespread panic as people fled to higher ground, fearing a tsunami. A tsunami warning was indeed issued, although it was lifted after three hours when no significant sea level changes were detected.

Yulian Juita Ekalia, a university lecturer from Ruteng, shared her fear as she cooked outdoors, saying, “I have never felt an earthquake this big. It felt like we were on a trampoline—it was really scary.”

Ongoing Response and Recovery

The BNPB has mobilised aid to assist those affected, advising residents to remain calm and avoid coastal regions and damaged buildings. As the search and rescue operations continue, authorities are working to evaluate the full extent of the disaster in this remote and mountainous area. The situation remains fluid, with local officials emphasising the need for ongoing vigilance in light of the aftershocks that continue to rattle the region.

As evacuations were initiated, reports indicated that approximately 2,000 individuals relocated to safer areas on their own. The psychological impact of such a disaster is profound, with many opting to sleep outdoors due to fears of further tremors.

Why it Matters

Indonesia, situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is no stranger to seismic activity, making such earthquakes a regular threat to its population. The recent quake underscores the urgent need for robust disaster preparedness and response strategies in a nation that frequently grapples with natural disasters. The tragic loss of life and widespread destruction serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by communities in geologically active regions and the importance of international support in recovery efforts.
