This groundbreaking event, held at the OBA Theatre in Amsterdam, utilised an innovative EEG-based device that transformed her brain signals into real-time movements of a mixed-reality avatar, allowing her to reclaim a piece of her identity and passion.
A New Era for Dance and Disability
Breanna, a mother of three from Tacoma, Washington, was diagnosed with ALS two and a half years ago. This degenerative disease, known in the UK as motor neurone disease (MND), severely impairs muscle function and can ultimately affect speech, swallowing, and breathing. However, through the pioneering technology developed by Dentsu Lab and NTT, Breanna was able to experience the exhilaration of performing once more.
In her own words, the experience was “exhilarating” and “magical,” as she witnessed her virtual self dance, guided solely by her thoughts. With the EEG headset capturing her brain activity, Breanna could control the avatar’s movements by imagining specific dance steps, translating her mental signals into performance.
